How can I prevent knee pain while running?

I'm taking a jogging course in college and I am required to run a certain number of miles during the course of the semester. Although I already exercised regularly, I am jogging much more now than before (I used to mainly use an exercise machine bike.) I've discovered that I often get knee pain in the middle of my run that sometimes persists when I'm not running throughout the day. Yesterday I noticed that I seem to be automatically tensing up my knees as I run. I wonder if this could be the problem. What can I do? I want to keep running... but my knee problems are painful and sometimes even force me to take a short break early

1. this happened to me and i went to the doctor and he said that i have jumpers knee... so you might have it too.. you get it from running or jumping alot. i bought a jumpers knee strap that you can get at like a sporting goods store and it works soooooo yep! :D

2. I suffer from knee pain in my left knee... everytime I take a break from running for a few weeks and then start up again is when it hits. I typically don't stop running unless it's crippling pain. Afterwards, I will keep my knee ace wrapped for most of the day and sit in the spa for about 20 minutes at night. A little ibuprofin doesn't hurt either. It usually goes away after a few weeks of training and rebuilding the muscle and tendons. Hope you find something that works for you.
