What's the best way to reduce compensatory pain?

Every now again I get cramp in my left leg when cycling, which causes knee pain. The way my walking compensates for the reduced mobility of my left leg causes really bad pain in my right hip. Is there any way to reduce the pain or stop myself from compensating so much? I'm 26 and fed up of walking like an old man...
I think I may have my cycle seat too high when I get the cramping.
