My cousin has fibromyalgia and is receiving medical treatment. Does anyone who suffers from this disorder have tips on how I can support her? It is terribly painful for her and I don't know what to do.

Thanks
@W.a.b- Yes she is seeing a rheumatologist and a neurologist. She is going to start treatment at a pain clinic soon.

1. fibromyalgia is caused by thyroid dysfunction, usually from nerve interference. see an hio method upper cervical specific chiropractor and correct the cause.

2. Mr. E, you are so far off the mark.

I'm sorry to hear your cousin is going through this. I hope she has a really good doctor. If she's not seeing a rheumatologist or a neurologist she needs to be. She might also benefit from seeing a pain management clinic. She really needs to make sure her diagnosis is correct. I was diagnosed at 18 and it was a misdiagnosis. I've heard many people who've been told they have this, only to actually have something like a vitamin deficiency (which can be easily treated) or an autoimmune disease.

The best thing for Fibromyalgia is to keep active. You will probably cop a bit of slack for suggesting this, but it truly is. I know a girl who was diagnosed at 14 and she stopped walking and doing things because she said it hurts too much. Now she says she can't even turn a tap.

She also needs to do the right balance of learning about her condition and not getting to absorbed in it. When I first got sick my GP (who I'd been seeing all through my childhood) said "I don't want to diagnose you/or you the be diagnosed with anything. Sometimes when I see people who have these sorts of symptoms and are given a diagnosis, they become absorbed in being sick and don't try to get better". I was so annoyed he said that at the time, but now I can see what he means.

Just be caring and understanding. Some days she will probably be too tired and sore to do anything. Don't give up on her or get annoyed if she has to cancel things.

Good luck.

3. i live with it, i don't suffer from it..

what I suffer from is that attitudes of doctors and others who can't act professional and human.

be sure it is what she really has..fms is HIGHLY Overdiagnosed by these idiot docs who use it as a general label for pain---most people really have something else--often more treatable and are suffering needlessly

while thyroid issues can cause pain and fatigue--that is not FMS--it is a different condition...

real fms is a neuro condition

4. The best way you can support her is to be understanding and there for her. Fibro is very difficult to cope with not only because of the pain and other symptoms but because many people do not believe it is a real condition. I was diagnosed with fibro about 8 years ago and over time it does get easier to deal with but is always very frustrating. For me, massage therapy has been the best thing I have found. I have written about my experience and other information about fibromyalgia at http://www.fibromyalgiasource.com
