1. You should really ask your doctor for his/her reasoning for prescribing that medication over your older medications.
2. Chronic Tension Headache is a Label - NOT a diagnosis - because it does NOT explain the source of the "tension".
In my experience most cases of chronic tension headaches are actually Cervicogenic Headaches - headaches caused by muscle tension in the head and neck that derives from biomechanical dysfunction in the cervical spine (neck).
It might be wise to have a thorough evaluation by your family Chiropractor.
Best wishes and good luck.
p.s. your condition is NOT caused by a prescription drug deficiency. Therefore, the drug is only attempting to mask the symptoms - it is NOT doing anything to treat the cause of your pain.
3. you really should ask your doctor about things you don't understand, especially medications. I take a lot of different meds, so i know from experience to ask. As for why.... well migraine medicine works fabulously on really bad headaches" cluster headaches, tension headaches, migraines.... so why not yours? Ask your doctor, if it doesn't work.... and definitely tell him if you have any side effects.
Also, try not putting yourself in the position to get tension headaches to begin with. Don't strain at a computer, with your neck craned, or angled up at a TV, etc. Also, headache medicine takes away pain temporarily. try a few relaxation techniques; get a neck/back massage. Medicine isn't the only way to go. you need to fix the REASON for the headaches.
And the last thing -- if you take something too long, your body gets used to it. Good luck!
