How do doctors tell if the knee pain is from the joint or a nerve?

My doctor gave my daughter a cortizone shot last week. And he said that by doing this he would be able to tell if my daughters pain was from a nerve or the actual knee joint. How does he tell which it's from?

1. They can tell by doing a nerve conductive study. They tape little wires to the area where the nerves are seated and run a small amount of electricity through the area and it registers on a screen. When you have nerve damage you can see that the nerves are not firing properly.
