what is the pain under my knee? patellofemoral pain syndrome? please help!?

I have been having bad pain under my left knee for a while now. It hurts with simple things like walking but does get much worse with more intense activities (I dance). It has been close to a month now and the pain isn't getting any better. I took an online diagnosis test and the number one thing it came up with was patellofemoral pain syndrome, could this be right? The main things that make it hurt are jumping, landing, squatting, and bending my knee past a certain point.

Please help! Thanks!

1. First, never trust an online diagnosis -- not even this one I am typing. ( I don't Dx online.. it isn't good practice).

However, your Dx of Patellofemoral Pain, aka: Runner's knee is very common and could likely be your issue.

It is caused by things such as :

Malalignment of the kneecap
Complete or partial dislocation
Injury
Excessive training or overuse
Tightness, imbalance, or weakness of thigh muscles
Flat feet

Without thorough examination it would be difficult and next to impossible to tell which , if any, it was.

I recommend you see a physical therapist and have a biomechanical evaluation, which will get to the root of this pain and then a treatment plan will be devised on how to alleviate your pain.

For now, ibuprofen twice a day, at 400-600mg would be fine, as well as keeping the knee loose but not doing any jumping or sport type activities till you can see the therapist.

You can see your family doctor first just to be safe, but likely you will need a PT.
