what is wrong with my knee? chronic pain?

my knee has been bothering me for over a year now. i've been told by an athletic trainer that it is probably just patellar tendinitis.it hurts mainly when i walk up stairs, run, or bend my knees. it will start at the bottom and around the knee cap and move up until the pain is on my whole knee. it's a dull achy pain but every so often a strong overwhelming feeling will come on suddenly. nothing helps, ive tried icing and advil. what could it possibly be? tendinitis or something different? im very active as i am currently in track.

2. From what you are saying about having issues with the stairs it sounds like you have what I have in both my knoees.
Chondromalacia patella is the softening and breakdown of the tissue (cartilage) that lines the underside of the kneecap (patella).

here are the symptoms
*

A grating or grinding sensation when the knee is flexed (moved so that the ankle is brought closer to the back of the thigh)
*

Knee pain in the front of the knee that occurs when you get up after sitting for a long period of time
*

Knee pain that worsens when you use stairs or get out of a chair
*

Knee tenderness

The best thing that you can do is get an appt with a orthopedic surgeon and get treated. If you ignore this and continue running all that is going to happen is it is going to get worse. Also be prepared the first thing that the doc is going to recomend is that you stop running seeing as how running is the worst thing that you can do for your knees. But if you dont follow the docs advice you might just be like me... my knees are so bad that at i am 38 now i have had 10 knee surgeries (6 in the past 2 years) and I am in constant pain. I am facing the possibility of a knee replacement sooner than i would like to in order to get away from the pain.
