Cause of headache at back of head?

This last friday, I woke up with a huge headache at the back of my head, on one side. I had occasional stabbing pain in the area, like if someone was hammering in a nail. The area was also particularly sensitive to touch, as in touching the scalp or hair would hurt considerably.

The next day, the pain was (almost completely) gone, however today, I got the full pain from 2 days ago (last friday). What can the causes be and is there cause for alarm?

Other (possible symptoms) are : I had ear pain friday, when the headache started. My neck is also fairly painful. I also did not hit my head as far as I know.

1. Most probably this is Sinuses. Have you ever felt dizzy when you woke up in the morning and looked down? All the symptoms you have shown are symptoms of Sinuses. I have 'em too and when sometimes when I develop a severe sinus infection, I can't touch my head because it hurts. My head is constantly aching and the sides and back of my neck ache as well.

2. Hi Ryan, Neck pain usually arises due to regular wear and tear in muscles. You can consult a doctor, but most of them suggests you a pain reliever which are made up of harsh chemicals that cause side effects. My mom had severe neck pain and my cousin who is a doctor suggested her a neck traction device which helped to relive her pain completely. I think this might help you to some extent.
