What is the best treatment for a tension headache?

I have been having extreme headaches lately and I am pretty sure they would be classified as tension headaches. They are getting really bad and advil and tylenol haven't really been helping at all. What is a good home remedy for tension headaches? What causes tension headaches? How can I prevent them from being so bad....it's actually getting unbearable and I feel like I can't function properly but I don't know what to do.

1. First of all go see your Doctor to rule out anything that could be serious. Did you know that the majority of headaches are due to dehydration? So make sure you are taking in plenty of fluids before you reach for the painkillers. Try avoid eating certain stimulants and see if they effect your headaches: caffeine, alcohol, cheese amongst others are known to trigger headache and migraine. If your headaches are stress related, you will often find that tension starts from the shoulders, into causing tightness in the muscles in the back of the neck which also can cause headaches , so it might be worth having a massage to see if you get any relief. Often when a headache is in full swing an iced compress, (a water tight plastic bag filled with ice and covered in a cotton cloth), placed over the eyes and temples will ease symptoms. But please go check with your Doctor as it seems as though this has been going on a while and isn't getting any better. I hope you feel better soon.
