Knee pain! Help with prevention and diagnosis?

Whenever I run excessively I always get pain in my knee right below the knee caps, and i end up running on my toes because it hurts much less when i do this. I play volleyball, and when we run before we practice I ended up practcing horribly because my knee hurts! And i am not old, so its not like my knees are withering away... please help!

Those pains usually happen when the tendon for the muscle to your kneecap tightens up pulling the kneecap up on and into the knee to make it hard and painful to bend your knee. those tendons can be freed up to get rid of the pain but are difficult to do and should be done by one trained for that.

Douglas was right by stating the muscles (which are the quads) get tight from doing activities and can pull on the patella (knee cap) which in turn pulls on the infrapatellar tendon (tendon right below the knee cap). So try stretching your quads before activity and after activity. You can lie on your side and grab your ankle and pull it backwards towards buttocks or you can do it standing - hold for 20-30 seconds and do this 3-5 times. Ice your knee after activity for 15-20 minutes will help with any pain and inflammation. Good luck.
