What is the best over the counter pain relief medication for middle back muscle pain?

I started running a drill press and I have to pull on a handle several thousand times a day and have been experiencing middle back muscle pain.

Public Comments

1. Advil

2. Aleve should help. I've had lower back pain for years-32 years of physical job- also do leg lifts and if you can go to the gym and do any exercises that strengthen the back with weights. Gym exercises counterract the damage done by repetition work.

3. Pain relievers can't address pain in a particular part of the body, so you can ignore any that make that claim. Any analgesic/anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin should work. Try them out to see which one is most effective for you.

4. Any muscle relaxant or pain medications (Aleve, Advil, Motrin, even Extra strength Tylenol) will do. You can also apply "Aspercreme" or Liniments and have someone massage it over the sore muscles. Warm compress also helps. You can buy long lasting heating pads like "Thermacare" to apply to the area.

5. I personally go with ibuprofen or aspirin (with food) because these will reduce any inflammation and give you some pain relief. You can take it every 4-6 hrs. and take tylenol in between, however, it will not reduce inflammation. Try a hot/warm shower to decrease muscle spasms and try to relax. I know you are suffering, but there is no need to just lay around. It's better to reduce your activity and rest when you can. Godloveya.

6. There's a few things you want to do besides JUST taking pills to get rid of your back pain. I've had pain for over 15 years, and still it comes and goes, but I've gone through extensive medical treatment for this, and so some of this might help for your situation:

You want to go to the chiropractor and get it checked out. Usually the consultation is free, and if you have medical insurance, most insurance companies will cover up to x amount of visits per calendar year, the rest is out of pocket, but it's worth it because in many cases going through chiropractic care, the healing can occur with minimal medications.

Over the counter for back pain is Ibuprofen or Motrin (anti inflammatory) medication, and Tylenol if the pain is really bad. If the pain is still consistent and won't go away, you need to see the Dr immediately. He/she might give you stronger medication depending on your situation. It's not uncommon to get a combination of medications, such as Vicodin or Percocet for moderate to severe pain, + anti-inflammatory meds such as Ibuprofen or Motrin, and muscle relaxants if it's muscular related. It might be neurological, neuro-muscular, or a combination of other things. Just taking over the counter meds will probably not fix the problem just like that.

You also might need to get x-rays to further determine the cause and reasoning behind the back pains.

In any case, I can't give you too much medical advice because I'm not a doctor, this is strictly based on experience, but tons of experience in this matter.

Physical therapy is also good to help your body stay balanced and your spinal chord controls the signals sent to the brain and back, which of course pain is one of them. I've gone through Phys Therapy and it helps.

If the pain is chronic, you might want to talk to a pain management specialist who will provide the right kind of care. But really it could be a number of things, and the best bet is to see your primary care Dr asap to get a diagnosis and go from there Good luck and hope you feel better.

7. Advil or any type of ibuprofen because it will not only relieve the pain but also help on inflammation which can also cause pain

8. Hi,

The best pain relief medication I recommend for middle back is a natural remedy. You should try this treatment: I-Live Pain Free is based on all natural ingredients that have been chosen for their healing properties. It is based on horsetail, celery, Vitamin D, Garlic, Stinging Nettle and B Complex. Combined together they have maximum affect. I am confident this will help you too.

Hope you feel better! Good luck!

9. Repetitive movements on a daily basis are a huge culprit for back pain. Aleve and Advil, work well, however, you don't just want to mask the pain by taking a painkiller. Although you do want to find some relief, I recommend a natural anti-inflammatory. Heal-n-Soothe, is a natural anti-inflammatory that uses enzymes to reduce inflammation.

So getting to the REAL cause of your pain. Barring, trauma, MUSCLE IMBALANCES, are the number one cause of back pain. Chances are, you have never heard of muscle imbalances and worse you don't even know that your own muscles are out of balance. But the reality is that everyone has muscle imbalances to some degree - regardless of age, sex, or level of fitness. No one is perfect. And even if you did manage to achieve perfection, you could not stay there for long.

In simple terms, a muscle imbalance occurs when you have overdeveloped and tight muscles in one area of your body while the opposing muscles are weak and stretched out of their normal position. These imbalances can happen anywhere on the body and often develop as the result of the routine things you do while on the job, playing sports, or engaging in other activities you enjoy. (or in your case WORKING A MACHINE AT WORK)

As your muscles get more and more out of balance, you end up pulling your self out of proper alignment thus producing uneven more stress and causing additional wear and tear on muscles, ligaments, joints, and even the spine.

Almost all of us live our lives with chronic unrecognized muscular imbalances and while it does take time for muscle imbalances to cause a symptomatic condition the first signs of trouble are evident on our bodies in the form of postural dysfunctions. Postural dysfunction can be seen in the abnormal position on the pelvis, head, neck, shoulder and even in the curvature of the spine.

Once a postural dysfunction has developed, your body cannot go on for long this way before you will begin to experience problems. That is why you should never just cover up the pain or put off addressing your condition. In other words, if you are in your 40s, don't wait until you're 60's to decide you have a problem. Try this analogy: If you drive your car with the wheels out of alignment, the tread on your tires is going to wear unevenly. If you don't get an alignment, eventually you're going to have a blowout. The same principle holds true for your back and other areas of your body.

Here's a simple overview: If your core muscles are out of balance - from a strength versus flexibility perspective - front to back or side to side, you will have at least one postural dysfunction (most people have more than one). What happens when your core muscles are out of balance is that your pelvis will be pulled out of its normal position. Because the pelvis is the base of the spine and controls the position and curvature of the spine, your spine will then go into abnormal curvature. Abnormal curvature of the spine is the root of all back pain - whether it's a pulled back muscle, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, SI joint syndrome, spondylolisthesis, and the list goes on.

I know it was a long answer, but when it comes to back pain, knowledge is power.
