What is the cause of this knee pain?

Yes,I am training for marathon scheduled for December this year.Recently I am getting a very strange pain in my right knee. The pain comes when my right leg goes forward and hits the ground. Also I said strange because yesterday I ran about 6 miles and there was no pain but after about 2 hours I got severe pain that I was unable to keep my right foot on the ground and it disappeared when I massaged it with oil.
What might be the cause of this pain?
I got a bit depressed because of this.Kindly suggest what should I do though marathon is still far away and I do not want to lose time and training.I would be highly thankful.

1. Knee pain is tricky in my experience. I've had various pains in all parts. Mostly from how the kneecap tracks in my case. I have loose muscles around my kneecap, so it "slaps" a bit when I run. I have to do strengthening exercises to get it in line usually.

I'd ice it after a run to take down swelling and maybe try some ibuprofen as well. There is some argument against ibuprofen though, so you may want to do a google search on it and make up your own mind...

Make sure you stretch well too. One common knee issue is from a tight IT Band (google that as well). You can stretch this out by putting one foot over the other like you're crossing your legs at the ankle, then bend to touch your toes. Do this and hold for 15-30 seconds a couple of times for each side. I've found this stretch helps me a lot.

Good luck!

2. From past questions you have asked I know that you not only want to run a marathon but you want to run a very fast marathon, a very fast marathon for a first time marathoner. You experiment with different training methods, such as repeat 100m sprints. The cause of the injury is overtraining, either training too much or too fast or a combination of both. Rest the knee by cutting your mileage back by 50% for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks just stick to the mileage you had been running for 2 weeks. Don't get depressed because as you say the marathon is still a long way away but understand that your mind and its idea of what is a good time is not runnng the marathon, your body with its limits is running the marathon.
Good luck!
