Knee Pain ...expert opinion needed plz! 10 pts.?

So I have this knee pain that started a few months ago, without any specific injury to the knee. The pain just built up gradually over a couple of hours of playing soccer, and then went away. I did not pay much attention to it at first, because usually stuff like that goes way, but I did go see a doctor.

First, here are my symptoms:
-Pain relatively localized, on the inside, front part of the knee, right at the joint line.
-Although pain gradually builds up with running/soccer, it is sometimes short, and sharp, and occurs when I am just walking, pain free. Usually when I do a turning motion.
-Sometimes, after walking all day (or biking for some time), there is some pain when the knee is completely straightened - this does not last long.
-Very rarely, I cannot straighten the leg completely, but that goes away very fast.
-With just walking, there are almost no pain, only starts after exercise.
-If there is pain, when I am turning, or completely straightening the knee, it goes away very fast.
(If I then bend the leg, and straighten again, the pain if gone)

I am really leaning towards meniscus tear, but my doctor wanted to check if it's some sort of inflammation first, so I got a cortisone injection. It has since been 2 weeks, and I have been resting (just walking), and the pain is still present - does that rule out any inflammatory disorder?

I got an MRI - which did not show anything, does that completely rule out meniscus tear?
X-ray came back clean too - not a stress fracture as originally thought.

I really need to know what's the cause of this pain. Has anyone had similar symptoms? What was the diagnosis/treatment? Can anyone make a good guess based on these symptoms?
