What is causing my Chronic knee pain?

I'm not the most consistent runner, but recently i've been feeling out of shape so I decided to go for a jog. Quickly after about 2 miles I noticed my knee's started hurting really bad. It got so bad I stopped at 3 miles because i couldn't take the pain anymore.

I decide not to run for about two weeks, and the pain slowly lessened but it still hurts when i walk up stairs and when I do really short sprints.

I've never experienced this pain before, and before when I ran quite regularly its not like running is a new thing for me. By no means am I obese, Im 5' 8" 145lbs. I'm thinking about eventually seeing a doctor if the pain persists, but I just want to poke around first to see if their are any reasonable explanations.

1. Try walking a while first to warm up your muscles.

Then go a little faster and a little faster until
you build up to your jogging speed.

after wards, ice down. I hope this helps.

you might want to see a doctor anyway.

2. Are you doing warm ups before each exercise period?

You said in you first paragraph that you are not a consistent runner and that you are feeling out of shape. Running 3 miles the first time out was probably a bit to much if you have not been consistently running for a while. After your warm up you probably should have tried for 1/2 mile for a couple of days then moving on to 1 mile for a couple of days, then moving on to 2 miles and so on.

You should have stopped at the second mile when your knee began to hurt and walked back home or have gotten someone to give you a ride. When you think you are running through the pain you are really just causing more problems.

You may have stepped wrong and not have noticed you did it.

Make sure you have the correct shoes for jogging. (From my knowledge of it walking and jogging require different shoes)

Look at the bottom of your shoes and make sure you do not have a side that is worm more than the other shoe as that could throw your gate off and can cause injury.

You really might want to see a Sports Orthopedic Specialist that deals with knees to determine what type of injury you may have.

3. i used to have knee problems like that in high school, especially during basketball season. i went to the doctor and he told me that it was because my knee muscles (it's been a few years and i can't remember the exact muscle name) are weak. he told me to do 3 sets of 10 leg extensions 3 times a week to strengthen them. i did that and noticed improvement within the week. i haven't had any other knee problems since. i'm not saying this is your problem, but it's an easy place to start.

4. First off you don't have chronic pain you haven't had the pain long enough, I have been dealing with constant pain in both my knees for 24 years now that I would call chronic.
Another poster said that your knee muscles might be weak and I think that they are right. What you need to do is focus on strengthening your quad muscles.
