What could cause knee pain and grinding after a fall?

I tripped and fell last Friday night (it's Tuesday now), and I bruised myself pretty bad. Worse than the bruising though, is one spot on my knee that took most of the force of my fall. At first it felt like a scrape in that it burned when I touched it. However, once I looked at it, I realized that my skin was intact. Now four days later, there is still that one spot that when I touch it, it shoots pain through my leg so bad that my eyes water. All of the bruises have come to the surface, and this spot remains uncolored, so I don't think it's a bruise. At first I thought it was nerve damage because it was an unfamiliar type of pain and the symptoms seemed to fit. However, today I noticed that if I put some pressure over the entire knee cap, I felt a sort of grinding, which would point to a fracture. Mobility wise, I can get around pretty well, in that I can walk with bearable pain, but it is certainly not comfortable. I think I need to go to the doctor, and my mom says it's probably just swelling that will go down in a few days. Does anyone have experience with this type of thing or have any idea what the issue might be?

1. you have some serious damage. you need a consult with an orthopedic doc. sounds like a torn meniscus. you might have a patellar injury. ice it and elevate. take ibuprofen for swelling. alternate with heat packs. i had a torn meniscus, and was on crutches for three months before surgery.
