Causes of knee pain in a 15 year old boy?

Im going to the doctors soon, but I want to hear your opinions too.I was prety weak,so I started running 6 months ago.I started getting knee pain and cracking noises,so I stopped for a month. My right legs stopped hurting, but my left leg kept cracking and making noises.I started light squats with no weight and I worked my way up to 150 squats with no pain. Then I took 2 weeks rest and the pain came back again. Now both my legs make noises and I have different kinds of pain. When I do a half squat I feel very light pain and I feel small popping noises. When I do a deep squat I feel a very sharp pain right in the middle of the knees,so I stop. When I strint i feel pain at the ligaments on the outer part of the knee.If I put my finger on my knee cap while moving it I feel its rubbing. The weird thing is that I only feel symptoms when I extend my knee. When I retract it i feel ok.

1. you could be putting too much strain on it from running or strenous activity
or maybe you have bone density problems

its hard to tell
either way I would stop exercising them for now and a see a doctor

2. sounds lkike a growing bone marrow, or might be growing pains. drink milk

3. Hi mate have you considered or even heard of Osgood-Schlatter's Disease???

Check out this link http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23069040/

It's pretty common amongst active teenagers, especially boys.

You can take pankillers or an NSAID eg an Ibuprofen containing painkiller but prolonged use or reliance on drugs should be avoided.

Consider using supports for your knees or a simple compression bandage.

Obviously you should contact your doctor as you can never rule out something more substantial.

Best of luck. NJ
