Anyone Heard of Knee Pain caused by lethargy?

My roommate (24) had knee problems almost 2 years ago. After a while he got a little better. Enough so that he was going to work, and living like normal. Occasionally he was a little sore. After that we started to go to the gym. He was worried his knee pain would come back. It didn't. Instead he got better. He could lift, bend and squat. We were going six days a week for at least a half hour a day, doing serious lifting. We had to stop (due to fund shortages) and we slowly started to see knee pain again. Then he got a job on his feet all day. He walked to and from work every day. His knee pain was mild, if even noticeable some days. He left that job after about two months and now he doesn't really do any physical activity. His knee has gotten really bad. It's to the point now that he walks with a cane. He can't sit for any period of time without pain. Sleeping causes pain. We thought maybe his diet, but its not consistent. He can't see a Doctor because he doesn't have insurance. HELP!
