Cause of knee pain while running?

While running I get pains around my knee cap, what are the possible causes? The pain is usually strongest just below (not underneath) the knee cap but it is also present sometimes above it too. Never really on either side of it though.

1. this happened to my sister and my friend.
my sister stressed out two of her muscles but not the other two so it cause pain, she was out for 2 weeks and just has to wear a brace now.
my friend, has patella, something syndrome, and she is going to experience pain for as long as she runs.

go get it checked out if it doesn't go away soon.

2. I would try running on smooth more soft surfaces. I would also consider buying a good pair of running shoes like New Balances. If that doesn't help I would see a doctor.

3. Do not run on hard surfaces.

4. I get the same thing
try not to bounce too much when you run
try to glide and hopefully it wont put too much pressure on your knees
it also helps to warm up in sweats so you loosen up you knees and joints.
also ice them after

5. Shin splints is a possibility. Even though its something that affects the shin it can cause damage and be painful in the knee area.
Read more about it, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_splints.
My brother had these and the pain was in the knee, so maybe.
Also, make sure that you stretch before a run and a little while into the run as that might be the cause.

6. Could be a number of things

Your quads aren't strong enough to support the knee, if you're just new to running it can happen

Running is very high impact, especially on the knees, ensure you're wearing proper shoes that support you.

If it's cold where you are, the knees will definately feel the effects, they just don't warm up.

I have 2 knee braces that I wear bc I'm new to running and they help support me.

7. That's the same injury I have! It's not too bad though because I can run through the discomfort. It's probably patellar tendonitis "runner's knee"
I wear one of these bands around my knee when I run (http://www.shopwiki.com/search/Canterbury+Patella+Band) they're cheap but I see that they take away the discomfort quite a bit.
Also, make sure your shoes don't have more than 300 miles on them. That causes injury also.

8. did you take a whicked spill a while ago? right now, my friends knee is SOO sore, and she took the spill like 3 wks ago.
