How strong should quad muscles be to avoid knee pain?

Everyone says to build up quad muscles in order to avoid knee pain, but how strong is strong? Is there a guide of, say, body weight vs how much you can left during a quad extension?

1. How strong, you say? As strong as it takes to not have pain. I would stay away from the quad extensions and go with the leg press machine. But what do I know, I've only had three knee surgeries and hundreds of hours of physical therapy. BTW, my knees don't hurt ever!
