I have chronic severe knee pain and docters cant figure out what the problem is?

About 6 months ago I hurt both my knees when I was climbing on top of my car and i heard a crack. Since then my life has been miserable in pain and mobility problems. I am a very active mom and I waitress for work. But I can barely get through the day because my knees are in soooo much pain. I wrap them verhy tight for me to feel stable but it doesn't work very long and I end up losing circulation and I have to take them off but when i do i feel wiggly and very loose with intense pain. My left knee is almost twice the size of my right one due to exreme swelling and bumps and bruising. I had an mri but it only came back with signs of extreme swelling?? How can something so obvious to the eye not come up on a very good test such as an mri. What
s wrong with my knees??

1. Hi,

What does your pain feel like? Aching, burning, throbbing, etc.? Do you have any sensitivity or pain when you touch your leg?

With the area of swelling, is there any difference in temperature or colour between that and your other knee?

What you're describing makes me wonder about a condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, which is a neurological condition that can sometimes develop after trauma (e.g. injury, surgery). The main sign is severe (usually burning) pain and generally accompanied by signs such as swelling, colour and temperature change.

It's generally treated with nerve blocks, medications and physiotherapy.

I'll have to come back to this later, but feel free to send me an email in the meantime if you'd like to.

2. OK there are many reason why you would have pain. I will just list a few.

1) ACL tear
2) torn meniscus
3) Knee misalignment
4) Foot misalignment
5) Pelvis misalignment.

If I were you I would go to a chiropractor. They will do an examination (along with the specific way you injured your knee), and then hopefully be able to treat you.

Many times after a minor injury, the injury will cause you to walk funny for a few days. This will affect the joints in the feet and knees and this can contribute to the swelling and problems you are now having.

I really wish you the best.

Btw, how long ago was the MRI- many times the initial swelling can keep the real problem from being seen, but after a while, it will appear. A good example of this is a stress fracture. You can not tell on an Xray if you have a stress fracture, but after 1-2 weeks you can because of the healing process.
