What is this chronic unknown knee pain I've had for 6 weeks now?
Back on August 1st, I was doing some jogging while out of town when this unbearable pain just came upon my left knee. I usually only use an elliptical machine but I was out of town so I had to jog. I can't exactly describe what the pain was like; sort of a sharp, grinding, stinging pain. But the area of pain was right on top of the patella and than up about an inch as well. After this, I stopped all my cardio exercising. I saw a doctor who said it was something like patella femoral syndrome. Recently I saw a physical therapist who gave me a stretching exercise for my hip flexor, saying that I just need to strengthen that muscle. But now, after I do this, the pain subsides, but than it travels down to the bottom of the patella and will gradually come back up to the top of the patella. Can anyone give me e any insight as to what is going on? It hurts my knee every time I try and flex my quad and even the simple act of walking will bring pain to my knee. Like I said, I don't do any cardio and haven't since this happened, I've iced it, I've used anti inflammatory medicine, and have been using an ace bandage for a lot of the time. Please help me if you can. Thank you.

1. When you were jogging were the shoes you were wearing good shoes? Did they offer proper support?
If you've seen a doctor and a physical therapist and are still seeing problems, it could have something to do with your spine. We see a lot of problems like this at the office, where people go to doctors/therapists and don't see any results.
That would be my suggestion. See a Chiropractor and find out if you possibly misaligned one of your vertebrae during your jog. Especially if you'd been doing a lot of exercise in one specific way but then quickly tried to do the same workout in a different manner. If your body isn't prepared for the strain of the new work out, it doesn't matter how healthy you are, things like this can happen.
Hopefully that helps.

2. it sounds like the doctor gave you the correct answer already, patella femoral compression syndrome or simply called runners knee.
The Patella tends to have too much movement especially with activity (the way it tracks within the femoral groove) With patella femoral compression syndrome, the patella is not quite centered within the groove.
without fixing the underlying problem the pain will continue to come back.
sometimes a special knee brace is necessary to help get the pain under control. Rather than just a bandage.
But well basically you dont need to be a runner to have runners knee. I also dont think it comes from doing cardio. For some its a complex chronic condition. If PT doesnt work go back to the doctor who diagnosed try bracing it with a very supportive knee brace. And if that does not help see what else the doctor can do for you.
Also Ask the doctor what the underlying cause could be.
Sorry Im not much help I was given the same diagnosis in both knees even though I am nowhere near being a runner. For me its chronic and nothing's really helped. I gave up going back to the doctor about it.
Id suggest you try doing physical therapy in a heated pool to relieve pressure on the knees but yet getting the benefit of exercise as well as the heat from the water.
