What are my chances of developing Fibromyalgia?

I'm a teenage girl and my mother was diaganosed with Fibromyalgia many years ago. Sometimes I'm very sore for no reason, and I usually have a pain or ache somewhere.

Public Comments

1. about the same odds as the people who have ever heard that name b4

2. My wife has that, as well as lupus. I'm no expert, but it isn't genetic. Aches and pains can be quite normal in your teens, as your body is still growing. Ask your doctor next time you're there if you have concerns about it.

3. When reading medical journals that discuss fibromyalgia, you will notice the words "functional" and "idiopathic" are used a lot. These are polite synonyms for "mental." I have read that It's possible to have a genetic predisposition for neurosis in general, but there is no genetic reason for you to come down with fibromyalgia in particular.

Anyway, the subset of mental disorders which includes fibromyalgia is called "conversion disorder."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversion_disorder

Any specific type of conversion disorder can be cured by hypnosis, but once one type is cured, another conversion disorder will take its place. The only permanent cure would be to undergo long hours of expensive psychotherapy. So you might as well live with what you have.

Incidentally; be skeptical of all answerers. One of them is so stupid she doesn't even know she is stupid.

4. FIBROMYALGIA IS NOT A CONVERSION DISORDE

it is a physical dysfuynction of teh brain

when my symtpms started i was a happy go lucky 5 year old living teh ideal life--house in teh suburbs--playing bbasebvall in tehbackyard--sumers down rthe shore and onteh boat, etc

they are beginning to find physical findings with fms

to be a conversion disorder--there must NOT be a neuro disease--they are finding taht ther eis with fms-

fms is not mentioned in teh WIKI page--if it were i would have it takenout

conversion disorder rarely starts befoe 10--i had sympoms long before then

they think that fms runs in families so you would have a higher chance than the general population based on that theory

i have a very large family--and no one else has it--only one non blood relative who was misdaignosed (he actually had lymes)

most people diagnosed with fms don't really ahve ot--ost have soem other condition--some are just hypochondriacs

itis highly over diagnsoed by incomeptant docs who label any pain as fms

because of teh high rate of misdiagnosis its impossible to tell if it truly runs in families

a certain repsonse has it BACKWARDS--in an email he said if you are cured by hypnosis, biofeedback, acupuncture you have fibro

it is the opposite--if you are cured throguh tehse menas you do NOT have real fibro
