What could be the cause of chronic knee pain?

a couple of times a month, like while going up stairs, etc i get a sharp pain in my knee that lasts a few seconds. Just now though, the side of my knee has started hurting, and I can feel something popping. I've researched conditions, such as discoid meniscus, but what else could explain it. I'll bring it up at my next physical in a couple of months,so please no comments of you should see a doctor, just some explanations is all.

i'm not an athlete or anything, just in college

Pain can last a few seconds,or a day. Its inconsistent

1. well it depends on what side of the knee and whether the popping occurs when you are bearing weight on it or just moving it while you are sitting. also, it would depend on if you have had any changes in your activity level and what you are doing.

2. u done messed yo knee up

3. Could be something as simple as degenerative joint disease or possibly a meniscus tear, but this would be constant pain. You should have your primary care physician refer you to a Orthopaedic doctor, if possible. Physical therapy might do some good too!
