chronic knee pain in 19 yr old?
I dislocated my left knee when I was 15. After waiting 4 weeks (dr's orders), I returned to irish dance (which is how I injured it, it's alot of jumping). This was almost 5 years ago, and I still have horrible knee pain. My knee starts hurting after I work out, after I sit still for too long, when it gets cold out, when I wake up in the morning, and it will randomly give out. It either grinds, pops, and will even make a squishy noise. I've done everything the doctor tells me and it still hurts. Any advice would be great!

1. Have they taken X-Rays? I don't know if this is what you have, but I have Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome and my knees hurt when I sit too long, when I sleep, and when I stand after sitting for a long time they feel like they have no strength to support my upper body. I am 20, I guess it's pretty common in younger women. My doctor gave me exercises, but I haven't really been doing them as much as I should.

2. well, it hurts of course, your knee after jerking by jumping, without any warming up before. but now i suggest you to make a 'cooling down'-like for your knee to cure. like that of squat-and-stand; bending and then straightening it; try a little jump again (or keep it warm with movements) and give it a squeeze of balm and not to let it be in cold environment too long (like in air conditioned room)
though, i can't grant you that these the best. its a knee...
3. You need a MRI. I had this problem and after it gave out the last time I told the doc something was seriously wrong. Instead of just trying to get it back on track myself, I went to the doc while it was still "out" and unable to be straightened. The MRI showed I had a torn ACL. It is possible it is something else but I would consider asking the doc to have a MRI done to make sure. BTW I have now had 2 ACL replacements because I tore it again. I'm currently recovering from my most recent surgery.
GOOD LUCK!!!

4. The grinding and popping indicates a maltracking patella which basically means the the ligament that holds your knee cap in place is loose and won't keep it where it's supposed to. You can buy a knee brace that it made for this at any store. If you wear it all the time for a few months it might help. However, I had this problem after a four wheeler accident and I had to have surgery to tighten the ligament in order to fix it. The next time you go to the doc you could request an MRI which is better than an x-ray for these types of problems. You could also have a bone spur on the back of your knee cap, I had this also. Oh, the the squishing noise is fluid build up from your knee being irritated and inflamed. You doc. should probably prescribe you some anti inflammatory med. like naproxen or mobic. Mobic works better, but it isn't cheap. Also if you are going to your regular doc. you should request a referral to see an orthopedic/sports medicine doctor they know alot more about your problem.
