How to get rid of chronic pain?

How do you get rid of chronic knee and back pain? I am only 49 years old but I am considerably overweight. (5'2", 250 lbs.) I know I need to lose weight, but that is not going to happen overnight. I am getting so tired of hurting all the time. Is there anything I can do to stop this pain? I haven't found any otc meds that get rid of it.

1. I would suggest trying Ibuprofen. My doctor always recommends taking 800 mg at a time (4 pills of the OTC kind). I have mild arthritis in my knees, shoulders, fingers, and elbows. I am only 27.

If you have already tried Ibuprofen, talk to your doctor. Tell him/her about your pain. They may give you an arthritis medication until you can lose the weight (if that is the cause of the pain).

The back pain I can understand. While I am of average build, I have had chronic back pain since I was 10 (as well as general joint pain at times). I've often wondered why my doctor has never really diagnosed me with a form of arthritis. If your doctor brushes you aside because you're "too young" for arthritis (like mine do all the time), I would suggest getting a second opinion (I can't because I don't have insurance). Back pain could be due to a lack of exercise. I don't have a lot of time to exercise (college student) but when I do (even just a short walk or yoga or stretching), my back and joints feel a little better.

Good luck!
