why do i have this chronic knee pain?

kk, so i have been having this chronic knee pain my entire life and it really hurts. i went to my doctor and she says its not normal for a 14 year old girl to have it, she said it wasn't growing pains. i was told to go to the orthopedist, i did. we are still working on the diagnoses. the pain is always on my right knee, it hurts on the front and back of my knee. when i walk my right foot turns out alittle bit and i don't know if my knee has anything to do with it. when i do any exercises my knee hurts more, there is no swelling. my mom bought me a knee brace and it helps a little. i love to cheer lead, i do a lot of cart wheels and handstand and back bends, but i stretch way before i practice. i was hoping you guys could tell me whats going on, or if i need surgery, if i do, how long will i stay in the hospital? will i need crutches? so as you can see i have no idea whats going on and if you do...can you explain with as much detail as possable .....thxs alot i hope you can help!!!!

1. because i know much more than an orthopedist

2. ahhh, it sounds like you just have tendonitis.

3. you might have an osteochondroma or bone spur. I just had surgery to remove one. Does your knee hurt when you move it? It was an outpatient surgery. I needed crutches for 3 days.

4. You could have a torn ligament, or muscle, or a nerve could be pinched. Are you stronger in your right foot? If so, then you're probably over-working it. I have the same problem when I run for Soccer and Track, ect. I just fight through the pain, but you aren't me, lol. Anyways, if you do have surgery, I'm going to say you'll be in the hospital for at least two or three days, more if something goes wrong. And yes, you will need crutches. Bad knees could run in your family, check with your mom or dad, or whoever takes care of you, and see if it does. The cartilidge in your knee could also be messed up, as well. There are numerous issues that could be in your knee, my best advice would be to look up chronic knee pain, torn muscles and/or ligamints. I hope you find a dianoses, and can still cheerlead. =)

5. if you need surgery, you will be on crutches. i had a total left knee replacement. i was on a walker for a week. two weeks with a cane. physical therapy three times a week. after 3 weeks i was walking. it,s been over two months(6/23) since my surgery., and i walk very well. i was in hospital two days. pain meds for a month(off & on). i was able to get in/out of the car after hospital. i drove in about 1 week. you are much younger(62) than me, so whatever might be done would go faster, i,m sure.

6. I've been dealing with the exact same thing for two years. I'm very athletic and play a lot of sports, so I needed to get the problem fixed. I went to two doctors, my family doctor and an orthopedic doctor. They took x-rays and MRIs and everything came up negative. They ruled out almost everything, and it seemed like the only possible explanations could be tendonitis or mild shin splints (I had some pain in my shins too and have had shin splints before).

So I wore a knee brace for basketball and softball and basically had to deal with the pain. I iced it after every practice and game.

But recently, just this summer, the pain started transferring. My knees got very swollen, and about a month later, I started to have some back pain. The back pain was something I couldn't play through, so I went to a chiropractor. She examined my back and told me that I had structural imbalances in my back and possibly a titled pelvis. She said it was caused from the knee problems, and the knee problems were most likely just caused from repetitive trauma and use- jumping (basketball), running, etc. I'm still having the back pain, and I won't go into detail about that, but that's pretty much my story and it sounds like yours could be similar.

At age 14, NO, you will absolutely not need surgery, especially since they can't find anything wrong. You won't need crutches, either. Basically, if they can't find anything wrong, you'll just have to tough it out and hopefully grow out of it. Good luck.
