3 year old with frequent leg pain at night?

My daughter is 3 1/2 and has had "growing pains" since May 2007. SHe started waking up at night with leg pain in May while we were at the beach. THe pain intensity and frequency increased throughout the summer and after I started journaling it I could see a trend with increased activity during the day. My daughter is a little knock kneed and the pain was most common during our beach vacations. I have met with a reumatologist and an orthopedic pediatrician. THe diagnosis seems to be growing pains secondary to hypermobility of her joints. My question is she wakes up average 3 to 4 times a week with these pains. The pain switches from side to side and at times is bilateral and seems to be her thighs right above her knee most. Does anyone else have a child that had growing pains at this frequency?? She is active and her night pain does not affect her daily activites. Thanks in advance.

1. Hi....If you have been to the specialists, and had all the tests, and it still comes up as growing pains....believe them. I have 4 children and 2 of them, the oldest(girl..now 19), and the 3rd (boy..now 11), had them horribly! I didn't know what I was going to do...I thought ALL the docs were nuts and that there was something REALLY wrong with my kids! Their Growing Pains lasted off and on until the age of 10! YES REALLY!! They go through exacerbations of the pains that can last up to a year, then they won't have them for a month or two(or Longer). The only things I found that helped was cool washcloths, and if really bad....ibprofen.
I feel really bad for you and your little girl!! I'm so sorry that she has to go through this!

Good Luck

2. It is hard. All kids get them to different degrees. I use an ointment called tiger balm for them and it seems to help.
It is usually by the icy hot type of products in the store.

3. my dear friend Im very sorry my answer is so short
please connsider a second doctor opinion and if time goes by and still nothing get a third
myself i have bony knees and I put a flat pillow between my legs when i sleep its more than likely not yur answer but
when it comes to our kids be an advocate get another opinion

4. My daughter had this and when I took to Doctor he stated it was growing pains...Some children get them.

5. fibromyalgia is what in my opion i started with that when i was 9(now 18) and it really was pain full it started in my thigh and through out the month it started spreeding downward and so on to the point i stayed up all nite and it was allover my body....
its a very weird pain...and it can come from 1 out of nowhere 2 family or 3 she might have been hurt in some small way like i just was playing and thought i pulled a muscule

i would say that she might have that or RSD which is the same it will take a while to find a doctor that will treat it and belive that a 3 1/2 yearold has it,also how you about when it happend when she was at the beach ... there is a weather condtion where when its cold the person's pain gose up like for me or in your childs case when it's hot it dosnt do her well but when it's cold it dose

feel free to E-mail me any time if you want help or have questions

6. i was/am very hypermobil and suffered with growing pain when i was little. they hurt very badly and my parents tried all kinds of ointments and stuff but the best thing for it was some tylenol and my mom rubbing my legs (up and down if i remember right) when i would wake up at night.

some of my friends growing up had shin splints, and osgundshlaters (there is no way i spelled that right) which both sound similar to what you describe. but my money is on growing pains.

sorry she has to go through that, but just remember that it means she will be tall when she grows up.

7. I had the same problem as a young child and was told that it was growing pains. The doctor prescribed pain medications. After many years it finally went away. I now have an almost 4 year old son and he has been suffering from "growing pains" for the past year. The only thing that seems to help is a pain reliever. I have also noticed that he has these episodes after being more active than ususal that day. But episodes don't come too frequently...at least not yet.
