New Treatment for Fibromyalgia?
I suffer from Fibromyalgia, and have been for many years.
But now I am noticing that each year I am worse then the year before.
It's affecting my whole life.
I have just recently heard of a new treatment for Fibro called the Guaifenesin Protocol, has anyone else tried this?
Thank you for any insight that you can give me.
I'm just not so sure that I truly believe this can work.

1. my doctor put me on guaifenesin a year ago and it totally improved my m.e and all my pain and symptoms and my quality of life was much better-he also put me on maxepa-which is like a fish oil-which improved my foggy brain, but when i found out i was pregnant a few months ago he took me off them and i have found that all my symptoms are returning- i would advice any one with m.e. to at least try them
2. MommaBear, I'm sorry I don't know anything about the treatment. I looked up fibromyalga & I'm sorry you have to live with those symptoms! *hug* is all I can offer...
3. Actually I may have already emailed you about this treatment. I don't remember but your ''name'' sounds familiar. The Guaifenesin Protocol is not a new treatment. It has worked for many people for yrs. It is safe and not exspensive. I am sure that once you read the info about it you may very well be convinced to try it. Anyway here is the info. You have to learn how to take the med properly for it to work on fibro. Here is a book you need to get either from a library or you could get it at ebay or amazon cheaper than a bookstore.

It is not a cure and it is not a pain
med but it has allowed me to stop taking prescription pain meds. I used to take them constantly. Check it out.
4. Yes read my 360 page about DRibose. Its working so well for lots of us fibro patients that the fibromyalgia treatment centers have added it to their treatment protocol. Its not a cure but a small piece of the puzzle. Also its much easier to do than the Guai treatment. Maybe the two combined would be good, I just never have tried the Guai since the DRibose works so well .

6. Hiya
Sorry to hear your condition is not improving and I feel much the same myself - getting slowly worse with the occasional up or down blip. I've heard of the GP, but seem to remember it was expensive and like most treatments, variable in it's efficacy.
I did some research on treatments recently and came across a relatively new drug called Modafinil/Provogil which is used to treat Narcolepsy. It's been tried more in the US for FM and with some success - most people found it helped, some that it helped alot.
I've been taking it for about 3 months now and although it's by no means a cure, it has made it possible for me to actually do stuff and get through a sentence without forgetting half way through where I started! The only side effect I've had is heartburn if I take them without a biscuit to follow. Sadly, they won't prescribe for the biscuits!
It had to be prescribed by a consultant under our PCT rules and I had to tell them about it, but if you're interested there's more and more stuff about it's use in FM on reputable health pages etc. I took info from the web for the medics to read to make it easier for them to say yes.
Modafinil is not being touted as a cure for anything and certainly not by me, but for some FM sufferers it could contribute to their usual package or treatment and make a real difference to how well they feel.
Good luck

7. Hi I'm Chris, I have had fibro, I do not have it right now, I got rid of it the old fashion way, getting into a regular sleep pattern, changing my diet, strting a slow mild exercise program, building to a moderate water based one, reducing stress, and learning to relax. However, I do suffer from Lupus, and co-own a Lupus, Fibro yahoo support group online. I did do a google search on this Guaifenesin Protocol, here in the dr's own words is what it is.
We no longer prescribe gout drugs (uricosurics). We now use guaifenesin for fibromyalgia because it has no side effects and is even safe for children. It is marketed for respiratory mucus problems and is available without prescription in various strengths, though some brands may not be effective for fibromyalgia. Currently, we can only advocate three products: the long-acting 600 mg tablets ‘Mucinex’ and one compounded for the Marina del Rey Pharmacy as well as a 400 mg tablet that is free of contaminants from Pro Health. (see Web site: fibromyalgiatreatment.com) We begin patients with 300 milligrams twice a day for one week. Feeling distinctly worse suggests adequate dosage and patients may remain on that amount. This suffices for only 20 percent of patients; if symptoms do not worsen, we increase to 600 mg. twice daily. Reversal begins for 80 percent of patients at one of these two levels leaving 20 percent who will need more. During reversal, symptoms are usually intensified and new ones may be experienced. These are not side effects, but signal that reversal is underway. Better hours eventually cluster into days and finally weeks. During this subjective roller coaster ride, lumps and bumps soften, fragment and gradually clear. Recovery is more rapid than the time it took to develop the illness. Even genetically-slow responders, clear at least one year of metabolic debris every two months. Longer endured disease requires more time to restore. Newer lesions clear first and the oldest ones last.
So basically what the paragrah is saying, is that it is, is Mucinex, the over the counter non perscription mucus medication that rids mucus. truthfully, I do not see the link between Fibro and Mucus. However, some in our group have had varying degrees of sucsess with the antideppressnt Cymbalta. which works on pain, mood, and sleep cycles. That I do know may be a better alternitive. Also I was on Mucinex for awhile for somthing unrelated, and while I do not technically have Fibro anymore, I do have days that I get the Fibro feeling, I had it a bit than, It didn't stop any muscle achiness. I'm sorry hon. I do belive that Cymbalta, and some lifestyle changes may be a better option. As we speak, for our support group, I am doing research for a 6-10 page article for our Fibromyalgia memebers, and will soon be looking into some of the various Fibro treatments, and ways to regulate the body, and get the body under control. Because from my own personal experience, I do know that the unrelenting pain, can at the least be controlled, if not almost totally rid of, if the right steps are taken. The main one, is getting into a proper sleep pattren. Which every Fibro person I know has a problem with.
I sure hope this has helped.
Ill leave you a link to that entire article so you can decide for yourself, and a link to our group, there are many with Fibromyalgia there that you can gain support and knowledge from.
Good Luck
Chris
