I've been having discomfort (not pain) in my lower back on the right side. What could this be?

The lower right side of my back has been bothering me for almost a month now. It's not painful, it just feels very uncomfortable and I always feel the need to stretch it out.

I'm wondering if this could possibly have something to do with my kidneys, although I have not had any other symptoms that would lead me to believe this.

I started a new desk job a couple of months ago; could it be from sitting all day??

1. Yes, most certainly could be the result of your new job.

Although sitting, you can cause strain on your back muscles, especially if you aren't sitting with both feet flat on the floor.

If you have one leg shifted to the side, it can can contribute to your symptoms.

You might want to adjust your chair to the proper height so that you can sit upright comfortably with your feet on the floor. Try that for a few days and see if it helps. If your back needs lumbar support to stay straight, they sell little lumbar pillows to help in that area.

Not sure what kind of company you work for, but making sure that ergonomic needs are met is a high priority for most. You might ask someone who handles the approval of office furniture and get a better chair approved to suit your body type. Some companies just have standard issue chairs, but they don't 'fit' everyone equally, and buying you a new chair is way cheaper than paying you for weeks of workman's compensation - if it's the chair causing your problem..?

If you feel that the discomfort is coming from deeper inside, then by all means, see a physician regarding kidney function, etc., but based on what you said in your question, I would go out on a limb and say it's your desk, chair or other ergonomic problem causing the muscles to be out of alignment.

2. Kidney or problem in the L5 region of the back, if it persist go see a chiropractor.
