What causes crunching and pain in the knee?

I've had these two problems in my left knee for years now. I was a cheerleader for 10 years and can't help but feel that in someway contributed to this problem. I've seen an orthopedic doctor for it and he took x-rays and said he didn't see anything and I need to exercise. Well therein lies the problem-I exercise 1 day and I can't walk for 3 days I'm in so much pain. I feel that there is something else wrong here. Any thoughts??

1. maybe a slightly dislocated kneecap? i don't think it would show up on an xray but if you can move your knee cap around at all that could be part of the problem, you can get a neoprene brace to help out while you're exercising.

2. Could be a cartilage problem. Maybe you should see another doctor for a second opinion - one who has experience with sports medicine.

3. Get a second opinion if it hurts you so bad you can't walk for 3 days after exercising. X-rays only show the bones. The ligaments, tendons, cartilage, etc. will not be seen on the x-ray and if any of those are torn or stretched it could cause a lot of pain.
