What could be the cause of knee pain?

My husband has a little issue with his Knee's, or rather I should say a HUGE issue. He has pain just behind the knee, whether he's walking or sitting, No amount of massage helps.
What could be the cause of this?

1. There could be a number of causes. The bone could have bruising or maybe there's some kind of syndrome he's acquired from his daily activity. Just go to the walk-in clinic to get it thoroughly examined. (Be sure to get a second opinion if they say "It will get better on its own".)

2. Miss Marple, I agree that knee problems are HUGE problems for the sufferer. I have had them for 30 years and the pain makes me not fit to be around some times. There are so many things that can be wrong that he really needs to be seen by a doctor who can maybe order an MRI. It can be torn/worn/damaged cartilage or the same with muscles/tendons/ligaments. Any damage to any of these causes exceptional pain and make a person miserable. It doesn't get better without intervention by a doctor. Hustle hubby off to one soonest for peace of mind for the TWO of you!
