What could be the cause of this knee pain?
My mom is 53 and has swelling on the medial side of her knee, right below the knee cap. It has caused her pain since October, sometimes so bad that she can't sleep at night. The doctor couldn't even tell her what's wrong. Any bright ideas?
no she does not have vericose veins.

1. does she have varicose veins?
2. Arthritis (there are different types of arthritis eg osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis,a blood test would help determine which type) Bursitis could be another cause. To be honest she should go back to the Dr. if there is no improvement and request a referral to an orthopaedic specialist, she may need xrays or a procedure called an arthroscopy to help determine the cause , I'm surprised she hasn't been back to see her Dr. before now, from what you describe it's just not normal to have that much pain since October. If her Dr. couldn't tell her what was wrong then he should have referred her to someone who does know.
