What causes lower knee pain? I've been working out lots on the elliptical?

Lately my lower knees start to hurt when I do cardio.

Public Comments

1. bad posture, previous back injury

2. ahhh. i ALWAYS have this same problem because of the elliptical. at least in one of my knees... and my husband....i don't really know how to get rid of it either.

3. it could b that ur knees just lik some rest. since u've been workin on ur elliptical alot, u're strainin ur muscles, it's not good to continuously execise n not take a rest from it

4. I used to have this as a long distance runner, real sharp pains, i found that i was stretching my quads wrong, if you are growing, your bones might not be keeping up with the growth of your muscles therefore pulling a lot on the bones, i suggest a calcium vitamin and stretching your quads properly (pull leg straight up to butt, not off to the side).

5. What do you mean exactly? Is it below the kneecap?
It sounds like the patellar tendon or ACL is inflamed.

Your knee is injured. You need to start icing your knee after you exercise. If this does not help you need to reduce your activity or switch activities to allow your injury to heal. If you ignore this problem it will get worse and ultimately result in you being sidlined and neeing physical therapy or at worst you will end up having surgery to repair a damaged ligament.

6. regular workouts (like running) can slowly grind away the cartilage in your knees. if i were you i would give it a rest, that can cause long term damage. that's what happened to my grandma. i would suggest swimming. it's good for your heart, lungs, muscles, and your joints.
