How do i get rid of migraine pain ?

I've been suffering migraine head aches for two years with no doctor's help.

Public Comments

1. Take a Motrin 800G

2. pills

3. exedrin migran is great

4. the no medicine way is to smell rosemary, it relaxes your nerves, like the ones in your brain, works great on migraines

5. TAKE MERSYNDYL AND LAY DOWN IN A DARK PLACE THAT HELPS ME AND NO STRESS

6. You need to tell your doctor and get some meds. I take Maxalt and it makes the pain less severe in 1/2 hour and gone in one hour. Talk to your doctor about your choices and possible side effects too. Maxalt makes me pretty sleepy so it's not the best when it's AM hours and you have to go to work.

7. many new medications to prevent the onset of migraines have come out over the last 2 years. speak with your doctor about them. have you found your trigger yet? i get them if i eat peanut/cashews or of course things containing them. others trigger from chocolate, caffeine, etc... my doctor had a list of common triggers and had me cut al of tem and slowly retry until we found the cause. now i almost never have one.

8. ask your doctor, or a new doctor for a sample of Imitrex. It is the wonder drug!! I had an attack in December that caused me to be in the emergency room. after an IV drip, they gave me Imitrex. It works wonders!! Hope you feel better. Stay away from coffee, chocolate, and MSG.

9. try to stay in a quiet and dark room with a cold wash cloth on your head and a warm blanket around you and try to sleep....sounds strange but it works.....

10. Squeeze the skin between your thumb and your finger. It releases endorphins.

11. Why are you not seeing a doctor? migraines are serious business. good luck.

12. Try the pressure points on the insides of your eyebrows. Run your fingers down your eyebrows inwards, towards your nose. At the end of your eyebrow hair is 2 pressure points. Moderate pressure while sitting down relaxed will help. However when you remove the pressure do it slowly and sit down remaining relaxed for a few minutes before standing up. Keep in mind, it may or may not work, but if it works. Dont abuse it. Do it as a last ditch effort if you dont happen to have some IB/Advil/Motrin around.

13. Try alliterative medicine, such as acupuncture. It's known to really help with migraines. Also maybe try Yoga.

If doctors haven't helped, I strongly recommend trying alternative medicine.

14. push your finger to your bridge of your nose it reduces pain

15. I get them quite frequently. Now there are many things I've done. Take a couple of Excedrin right when you feel one coming on. Put an ice pack on your head and turn off any bright lights. If you are not able to do this try a couple of aspirin and a small cup of coffee. Migraines can come from sudden drops of caffeine levels. Doctors gave me a caffeine laced codeine and vicodin tablets. They were brutal and would often make it impossible to sleep at night. Another thing I've done is take a warm to hot bath and cover my eyes with a cool wash cloth. The last thing that I have done and it's not legal is pot. A few hits helped cure one of my worst migraines ever. However, I didn't like feeling lazy the rest of the day. Good luck, I hope this helps.

16. relax, in a quiet area. Place your entire body under the covers and sleep.

17. My wife suffers from migraines and she takes an over-the-counter drug made in Brazil. I don't know what it's called but, it works. Only thing is that it has caffeine in it and it's like drinking two cups of strong coffee in a row.

I have heard of treatments that incorporate bee stings around the perimeter of the cranium at specific trigger points. One treatment is supposed to cure you for life. I met a guy years ago who claimed to have had this done.

If you want the name of the drug I can ask my wife when she gets back from Brazil next week.

18. I've had problems with migraines for years, and used to go the drug route, until I found myself addicted to demerol (this was like 15 years ago). Fed up, I went to a clinical psychologist who specialized in migraine. He used a combination of biofeedback and hynosis on me, and it worked amazingly well. During one of our sessions, I had a full-blown migraine, so he did a hynosis session, which he tape-recorded for me. Ever since then, any time a migraine comes on, I drag out that tape and listen to it. It still works like a charm, and I have not used drugs for migraine ever since.

One other possibility - are you definitely experiencing classic migraine, or could it possibly be a histamine headache (aka cluster headache)? While more common in men, some women can also suffer from these, and surprisingly sometimes a simple antihistamine like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can make a huge difference....

19. Do regularly Pranayamam, Yogasanas and Meditation

20. I too had years of migraines; they can be excruciating. Avoid drugs like demerol, they'll only give you a rebound migraine worse than the one you went in with.

Of course, stay away from red wines (sulfates) and fermented cheeses or foods with lots of preservatives. Get plenty of rest, lots of water and see a doctor to determine the cause if possible. Hormones can play a huge role, especially if you have the migraines near your monthly cycle. If so, mention it to your OB/GYN. Reduce stress as much as possible. Find a good doctor or health care professional that understands migraines. (My doctor had them, too, so he was really in touch with techniques and new info...)

I have only had 2 migraines in the past year after starting to see a chiropractor, getting weekly vitamin B shots and stopping all other medications except multi-vitamins, and the occasional motrin. Also, try whatever type of meditation or relaxation techniques that work for you... If all else fails and you must see a doctor for the pain, ask for a toradol (sp?) injection. For some reason, it works the best and fastest with the least adverse side effects. I have heard that it is non-narcotic and it interrupts the pain cycle in a different way.

Most importantly, don't give up and don't despair. Don't feel guilty about taking care of yourself while you find out what works for you. It's easy to get down on yourself when they are frequent like that. Good luck!

Some quickie tricks I learned over the years:

Try placing a chilled soda can behind your neck for 10-20 minutes.

Have a cup of coffee (caffeine is a main ingredient in some migraines medications).

Try to get a cat nap in a darkened room to stop a migraines from coming on.

21. Even if you see a doctor , this would not help . Migraine is a result of an unknown cause. anyway, make sure you are suffering a migraine and not a CLUSTER HEADACHE which is nearly the same in pain and consequences : vomitting, feeling dizzy, tenderness to light... etc.
Once you areundergoing an attack, just lie down on your back and squeeze your head with a tight tie or showel. Try warm or relatively hot compressors directly on the eye or the area of pain ; make sure to avoid cold water or ice compressors ..etc.
The more you are addicted to pain-killers the weaker is your chance to get rid of / cope with this pain .
Providing me with info about your state would help me diagnosising well whether you are under migraine or cluster headache. (Noted cluster headache is a branch of migrane family, attacks for a shorter time , yet its pain is sharper than migraine itself)

Wish you prompt recovery

22. Talk to your doctor!!! My mom figured out every time she ate sourdough bread or chocolate she'd get horrible migraines. Also, her doc put her on a new drug that works wonders!! :-)

23. Exedrin Migraine works well, but you really need to consult your doc on this because there are great drugs that can help Imitrex is one that comes to mind. I take that if the Exedrin does not ease the pain.

24. Are you still drinking coffee? You need to watch your diet, if you have migraine headaches - no caffeine, watch your intake of carbonated, sugary drinks (sodas), no cheesecake: these are just for starters.
You need to discuss your diet with your doctor. No pot. No alcohol - nothing that will dilate the capillaries or blood vessels around the eyes. OW - you don't NEED ow..
