fibromyalgia?
Would it be possible for a 30 year old female who is having symptoms of severe back and joint pain and also has swolen hands and feet to be suffering from fibromyalgia? If not what else could this be?

Also I am not the one suffering this disease, it is my friend who is a female.

1. It is entirely possible, but I suspect that it is something else. Fibromyalga usually targets more areas of the body and is described as a "pain" disease. I highly suggest you see a doctor regarding this. Good Luck and God Bless.
2. It's totally possible....Could be rheumatoid arthritis also....should get it checked out.
3. Well "Curtis", fybromyalgia is what doctors diagnose when they have no clue what is wrong with someone and they want them to get out of their office. Same as "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome". Go to an internist and have a check-up.
4. It is certainly possible. Fibromylagia can affect people of all ages it is a non-discriminant condition. However, you may have something else going on. I would suggest consulting with your MD and have him run some tests for Lyme disease, rheumatoid arthritis and other systemic joint diseases.
5. Yes, I have fibromyalgia and have done extensive reading about this disease. Firstly, fibromyalgia affects more women than men. Secondly, having swollen hands and feet are symptoms of fibromyalgia. (However,they are also symptoms of other conditions). She could be suffering from fibromyalgia or other conditions. The best advice I can give you is to have her see her family doctor. The doctor can do tests (especially tests such as blood tests...ESR and CRP blood tests) to see if she has inflammation in her body.
If you have inflammation in a part of your body then extra protein is often released from the site of inflammation and circulates in the bloodstream. The CRP and ESR blood tests are commonly used to detect this increase in protein, and so are 'markers' of inflammation.
The ESR and CRP level are raised many inflammatory conditions. For example:
* Certain infections (mainly bacterial infections)
* Abscesses
* Certain types of arthritis
* Various other muscular and connective tissue disorders
* Tissue injury and burns
* Cancers
* Crohn's disease
* Rejection of an organ transplant
* Heart attack
6. I agree with True Grits. Fibromyalgia is one of those conditions for which you will never get effective treatment, at least, in my experience. It doesn't sound like the condition you are having. It sounds more like you could be pregnant, but I'm sure you have checked that. Keep looking and good luck.
7. it could be anything. you can't expect to find a definitive answer here. of course it could be fms, but there's no sense guessing.
it could be gout. hopefully it is temporary or at least a benign ailment. my personal suggestion would be to rule out any auto immune diseases. this can be done with a blood test.
8. Gotta agree with several of the previous answers, especially from those who, like me, have FM. I just answered another question on this so here are the links. Of course, FM is an autoimmune disease and they tend to travel with sister syndromes such as lupus and RA (which I and many friends also have) so confusing symptoms go with the territory. Please give your friend the links and keep helping her find the info she needs. That's a very good friend indeed!
