Runners knee / patellofemoral pain?
I have had 'runners knee' for 7 years (previous cycling injury). After the first injury I saw a biokineticist (didn't help), also saw a sports physician, knee surgeon, podiatrist. All gave the same diagnosis and treatment: rehabilitative exercise. I did the exercises for 3 months, but it didn't help. The pain would only occur after cycling, so I didn't cycle for 7 years. I tried running a couple of times, and a few months ago was able to run without pain, during or after. THen tried cycling, and amazing! could cycle without pain. Thought it was cured. So i bought a brand new bike, and had it professionally set up. It brought the pain back severely. Tried running, and that was now painful again.
So I'm back with a biokineticist again. I'm looking for people who have experienced chronic runner's knee (especially cyclists!) and would love to know how you got over it, or if you haven't.
I should have mentioned, I'm not actually a runner, I'm a cyclist - I want to get back on my bike, but can't....

1. I was like you for a while, although i was fine on the bicycle.
Running caused a great amount of pain in both my knees. '
Have you thought about running on grass instead of concrete or bitumen? I found that grass absorbed the impact and reduced the strain on my knees.
I went and saw a sports physician and he told me to perform certain stretches before i went running...
Later: i dislocated my left patella (tearing the MPFL - Medial Patellofemoral Ligament). I had to do physiotherapy for a while to get my knee back in perfect, working order. When my knee was better i decided to start running again, however the original stretches did not seem to help when i ran...
A few months later i had another knee-dislocation, re-tearing the MPFL. I did not want to go through all that rehab. again so I saw an Orthopedic Surgeon who recommended a " KNEE PATELLA STABILIZATION WITH A PATTELOFEMORAL LIGAMENT RECONSTRUCTION USING A HAMSTRING GRAFT. "
The recovery was very hard, but well worth it! I am now running without any problems and i can run on hard surfaces although i prefer to run on grass.
I hope that answered your question.

2. look into the POSE technique of running that minimises impact injuries.
