What do you do for those awful pregnancy headaches?

I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and I get a headache almost daily. My doc says it's ok to take Tylenol, but that has never helped. I have always taken Excedrin and it works like a dream. Now that I'm pregnant, I have taken it a few times, but I know I can't take it daily. What the heck can I do? I have always had headaches, but always been able to take something that knocks them out to. What do you do?

Oh-laying down is not an option as I work full time (secretary) and have 3 more children when I get home. Thanks!
So I called my OB--he called in a prescription for Darvocet..I really questioned him on how on earth this could be safer than excedrin and he was very adimant about not taking aspirin of any kind..alrighty then..now I know.

Public Comments

1. I have to take Vicodin ES

2. Ask you doctor. They might give you a prescription that is stronger but safe for the baby.

3. Well I was going to say sleep until I read your last comment, I have a lot of headaches pregnant or not and love the Excedrin also. I always thought Tylenol was like taking water, it did nothing for me.
One thing that helped me when I was pregnant was eating more often, I ate 6 small meals instead of 3. I would keep a sandwich in the fridge at work and eat a 1/4 or a 1/2 at a time and it helped some.
Good Luck

4. Be careful on the drugs containing ibuprofen -- like the Excedrin -- because it makes you have a low amount of amniotic fluid. If the Tylenol isn't working, try going to a chiropractor or having massage therapy or hot showers.

5. hmmmm when you get ready for bed... get a warm clothe and place it on your forhead...

that helped me

6. I know this may sound too easy...but it seriously works.

Drink more water.

I am 17 weeks right now and I still have the nausea, but my headaches have pretty much gone away. Also, I agree with the other comment about eating more frequent, small meals/snacks through out the morning/afternoon. (That's when I had my headaches- morning and afternoon mostly) Seriously, try more water, you may pee more often the first few days up to a week while your body gets used to the extra water =) but that'll give you an excuse to get up for a minute. =)

7. I have found that Gatorade works wonders. I'm not sure why, but I think it is because we pee so much that our electrolytes get low and this helps replace them. When you pee all the time, you tend to get a little dehydrated and that can definitely cause headaches. You could try it, at least. It works for me sometimes.

8. I have had headaches on and off since two weeks before the positive sign came up on the test lol. I too work as a secretary 9-5 and noticed on the weekends, when I'm not working my headaches are not that bad. I assume its from staring at a computer screen ALL day and that that cannot be helping them. So now I get up and walk around and read files on paper instead of on the computer and take advantage of my lunchbreak by taking a nap daily and my headaches are pretty much nonexistent. Also I realized that last week, what I thought was a bad headache was really a toothache which are also common. BUT anyways other ways i soothed the pains in my head was drinking lots of water, anytime i was dehydrated they intensified, and also ate regularly. I also take 2 es tylenol which my doc okayed with one cup of coffee with extra milk to replace some of that lost calcium that comes from the coffee. Hope I could be of some help!
