What happens to your brain when you cough? What causes you to get a headache when you cough alot?

My mom asked me why whenever she and I cough alot as soon as we finish coughing we always have an extremely bad headache.

Public Comments

1. The headache is caused by the pressure put on the capilaries in the brain when you cough.

2. Severe coughing will cause the Carotid artery to temporarily close off and slows the flow of blood to the brain. In severe coughing cases, as in those with emphysema, this can sometimes cause blackouts. Not sure about the headaches, but whenever you restrict the flow of blood, things happen..
