Migraine prevention medication question?!? Hey guys. I have had migraines for 10 yrs. I have tried preventative--- topamax, depokate and inderal. My doctor put me on 20 mg of inderal, and it didn't do ANYTHING. My mom went on blood pressure medications and her headaches have virtually disappeared... I have changed doctors since..and have read online about it--most people take between 160-240 mg of inderal per day (at least 80 mg) for migraine prevention. My NEW doctor had offered to put me on it but I said no (not realizing the difference in mg's was THAT big)... I have also read that Elavil is good for migraines and sleep (and depression). I have trouble sleeping and of course, have ridiculous migraines. Plus, I have suffered from depression (but I they have diagnosed me with having bipolar, if i take a SSRI -bipolar IV - i believe). I am wondering what peoples exp's are w/migraine prevention--specifically inderal and elavil. Trying to decide what to try first, if anything at all... Oh by the way--background info on my medications: I am not taking any medication for depression. they tried to put me on mood stabilizers but they made my brain foggy and I couldnt handle it. I don't feel 100% now but I feel better than being on depakote, seruqel, and lamictal (the meds they tried me on). I am only on Imitrex 100 mg, and phenegran 25 mg--as needed. Also, I take fiorcet w/aspirin for non-migraine headaches. Plus, topamax and depokate did NOT stop my migraines!
Any advice on how to treat migraines besides daily "prevention" medication? I sometimes get *horrible* migrains (pass out from pain, severe vomiting, etc) and have narrowed it down to that peanut products mostly trigger them, but sometimes I get them anyway. Any advice on over-the-counter medicines or home remidies? I've heard some odd remidies and wondered what you all think?
Should I go on medication? I've suffered from chronic headaches since I was in 7th grade. I also get migraines somewhat often, especially if I am under stress, lack of sleep or not enough/right food (and sometimes for no reason) I've gone to doctors to try to figure out WHY I get headaches, but all doctors want to do is just give me daily medication to prevent headaches- they say it's just common for women to get headaches more often. I've always declined, because I don't like the idea of being constantly on medication, I don't think it is good/natural for the body or liver, and I've just dealt with it by taking ib prophen or excedrine migraine if it's really bad. When I get migraines, I'm often totally debilitated (sight is affected, dizzy, slur speach, nautious) until the meds kick in. However, this only happens once every 2-3 months or so. I am getting married next month, and I am worried about getting a migraine on my wedding day. Should i just go on prevention medication this month to prevent a migraine, or should i just deal with it that day if I get one? I just hate the idea of being on medication. I really don't think it's good or natural for the body.
Amitriptyline for migraines? My neurologist just prescribed Amitriptyline 10mg per night for me as a preventative migraine medication. Has anyone out there had any experience with this medication for the prevention of migraines? Did you have any side effects? Other information: I do not have depression. My migraines are not stressed related but are triggered by weather changes, hormonal changes, strong odors and MANY foods. I have tried many BP meds and anti-seizure meds but I seem to be very sensitive and have many side effects. I appreciate the advice that adstidamrn gave. I was just adding details because I realized I was vague. This was not meant to be insulting and I didn't thumbs down anyone. I am also in healthcare and have taken Pharmacology classes...I am familiar with the medication, my question was asking for people's personal experiences with taking it.
Giving Blood? I am coming up to 17 and so want to start giving blood but i am on daily medication for migraine prevention, can i still give blood?

I am 5'2, 85 pounds and 15 years old. i have not yet started my period yet. i have had discharge for like a year now maybe and i was wondering if i will get it soon. do i not have enough body fat for my period to come? and does elavil, my medication for migraine prevention, prevent my period to come... i have no boobs.. i wear a padded 32 A ITS ALOT OF QUESTIONS BUT PLEASE HELP/GIVE ADVICE!! please no rude comments.. i just wanted to know if it was coming anytime soon. Believe me i am not looking forward to getting it! please no rude comments.. i just wanted to know if it was coming anytime soon. Believe me i am not looking forward to getting it!
Is there a way to NATURALLY prevent (or limit) reuptake of serotonin? >>>Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a class of antidepressants that acts by blocking the reuptake of serotonin so that more serotonin is available to act on receptors in the brain. <<< Currently, my doctor has prescribed an SSRI medication [Lexapro] to help prevent my migraine headache suffering. HOWEVER - while this approach has seemed to work pretty well, it does not address the real problem: What is causing the REUPTAKE of the serotonin in first place? I don't mind taking a medication as a temporay fix, but I don't want to keep pumping drugs into my body over a long term, or to keep shelling out money for something that never solves the root problem, & I CERTAINLY don't want to continue living with the stigma of being a "pill-head" or being on anti-depressant drugs (even if they are only for migraine prevention). Is there a natural way to prevent (or limit) reuptake of serotonin? What causes the reuptake process to be triggered in the first place?
Headaches everyday, severe migraine once a week... Help please? I went to the Dr for this last month and she prescribed me an Anti-seizure medication. At that point I was having 3-4 severe migraines a week. This new medication has dropped it to one. I was also given treximet to take when I get the migraines.... Anyways I have a headache all day every day. Its constant and tylenol doesnt seem to help it. Its always in the same spot ( back right side of the head) When I do get a migraine, it seems to start in this spot as well. The migraines get so bad that I would just rather be dead. Treximet doesnt help me. The side effects arent worth the trouble either. I just dont know what else to do for these headaches. My dr said that we have tried about everything there is to try as far as prevention and helping with the pain once I get one. I believe a need an MRI... Is it ok for me to ask for this or will the Dr think Im nuts?
Will Topamax side effects subside? I have been prescribed Topamax for migraine prevention, I started 25 mg 6 days ago, as of the past 2 or 3 days I feel very foggy and out of it, having stomach aches, feel like my eyes are strained and I am fatigued. I also have the tingling in my feet every once and while but that doesn't bother me so much as the other symptoms. I have been suffering with terrible debilitating migraines a few times a week for years and my doctor is very hopeful that Topamax will really help me so he doesn't want me to give up on it just yet, from others who have experiance with it, do these side effects subside after a while and will I get used to the medication?
Does any 15 yr old weighing 110# take 25 mg of Topomax ftwice a day for Migraines? My daughter is 15, weighs 110#. She was just prescribed Topomax, 25mg twice a day for prevention of migraines. She has gone online and saw what some people had to say about the results of taking this medication. Most things she read were scarey and now she is afraid to take it. Does anyone have any positive feedback about taking 25mg of Topomax twice a day for the prevention of migraines?
medication combinations topamax, adderall and oxy ? I get severe migraines and have been on many things. The common remedies have never worked. For prevention I take topamax 100 mg 2x a day and I also take 30 mg of adderall in the morning. I am also prescribe oxy C for the migraines that are not prevented. The oxy is useless doesn't help my pain it gives me crazy energy and keeps me up all night. I thought it's purpose was the opposite. Also my face tingles or feels numb at times. I feel light headed or very dizzy like i'm going to pass out. It all helps me not have these head aches everyday but I have to believe something natural would help. What I'm taking now has to have a long term effect later. So which medication is making me feel so wierd?
Please Help!!!? Ok, I've been a terrible migraine suffer 4 over 10 years. I've had 4 CT, 2 MRI's, & 1 sinus scan. My old Dr. believes it's all hormonal, stress, & weather change. After being a guinea pig for over 5 years, we found that the triptans, etc do not work. 4 really bad migraines my Dr. always gave me Demerol and Phenegran. I became allergic to that. Then he switched me 2 Nubain and Phenegran. I call it my wonder drug. I know that sounds terrible cause it's a 2nd dary narcotic. I'm 31 and have never done any drugs in my life except what the Dr.s give me. My Dr. can't prescribe me Nubain because of his partners and the fear of street selling. He doesn't accuse me of that but that is the Dr. concern with all patients with high potent meds like that. The ER never even has a problem giving me this medication while I'm there. Here is my problem. Is there an online clinic/Doctors that can prescribe this to me if I get them my records? Dr. visits are getting way to expensive 4 shots. I would like... 2 minutes ago - 3 days left to answer. Additional Details 1 second ago this all legal. My Dr. knows no one in Nebraska who would prescribe this cause it's a narcotic (I understand his concern). I've never been accused of being a druggie nor do I have my files at the Dr.s or ER flagged 4 concern, even though I'm a regular. I do migraine prevention but it doesn't always work. So if anyone has any advice on how I can find a pain Dr. not afraid to prescribe this medication then please help me out. Tired of being depressed because of pain...It's ruining my life. I want my life back. Thanks for readin E1
What would happen if I suddenly stopped taking Topamax? I've been taking it for about a month. I started at 25 mg for 5 days, then 50 mg for 5 days, then 75 mg for about 17 days, then just started on 100 mg tablets. I've read that it can cause a seizure if I stop taking it suddenly, but I'm not on it for that reason...I'm on it for migraine prevention. I've been having really horrible side effects and desperately want off this medication, but can't get an appointment to see my doctor until right before Thanksgiving...that's too long to be on this drug. So what would happen if I just stopped taking it?
Soft tissue damage not showing on MRI? I was in a somewhat minor vehicle accident back in December 06 (not at fault) and still have neck pain and migraines. I was told I have whiplash and have been seeing a chiropractor, physical therapy, and I am on multiple medications for pain and prevention. I am still suffering with the neck pain and headaches and it has been three and a half months. My muscles should have healed by now. I just had an MRI of the brain and neck and both came out normal. Is that normal for soft tissue damage to not show up on an MRI? The next step that my neurologist wants to do is refer me to an anesthesiologist to get nerve blocks to my neck so I can stop feeling the pain and hopefully heal. It has been a long process and I am tired of being in pain and tired of all these medical appointments. I had my appointment today at the anthesiologist and he wants to start me off with a cervical epidural steroid injection (CESI), which is basically to stop any inflammation which could be causing the pain and muscle spasms I am having. He feels that this could be what is causing the neck pain and migraines. I this doesn't work he then may try and actual nerve block. Has anyone had an CESI? If so what is it like? Is it painful? Did you find relief and if so was it immediate? I hope it works, because I have been dealing with this for far too long.
I suffer terribly from chronic, severe migraines. Today the newest doctor at my clinic said...? he doubts me because I don't frown and grump all the time. I have had these headaches for the past 19 years and currently see a Neurologist for the treatment of them. I have had many tests of all types and tried everything other than Botox and surgery (I can't afford those two options). When the headaches started I promised myself I would not be rude or hateful to others no matter how badly I feel. There seems to be no definitive test, only symtomatic means of diagnosis. I have prevention medicatons and some medications that I use at home to abort the heacaches; however, my Neurologist has pre-approved up to six pain shots per month. Now this rural clinic wants me to contact the Neurologist's office EACH time I need a shot and have her call them to okay it. They are already supposed to fax her when I get an injection but state that they don't always 'remember' to do so. Do you think this new request is a bit foolish? The two offices are about 100 miles apart and the only place I get shots is at the clinic. I have always insisted that the two care givers stay in complete communication. I use only one pharmacy and am certain to keep both offices informed of any medication changes. I just don't know what else to do. By trial and error I have learned that there are two different shots that are helpful to halt the headaches when they are bad enough to need one. One is Nubain and Visteral and the other is Nubain and Benadryl. I have even found that sometimes Toradol and Benadryl is helpful if I can get it quickly enough. Any suggestions?
Want to get pregnant but have to take preventative meds for migraines. What can I take? I am taking Atenolol.? I currently take Atenolol but suffer from chronic severe migraines. I have 15-20 a month. I am finding it difficult to find a medication that I can take for prevention and treatment that is considered "safe" for pregnancy. Any suggestions? I can't be the only one who suffers from migraines and treats them pre-pregnancy or while pregnant. Help! I currently see a neurologist for the frequency of my migraines. We have figured out that caffeine is a major trigger. I started to avoid caffeine when possible starting in '99 so I doubt that is what is causing them now. I was taking Topomax for prevention and then stopped taking it in November when I started Atenolol. My OB said she would take me off that if I ended up pregnant, though. When I asked her what I could take, the response was Tylenol or go to the ER. Not so help full. I need to be able to prevent and treat the migraine headaches since they affect the quality of my life. Natural remedies, acupunture, therapies.....I am willing to try anything to get relief. I was just wondering if anyone else might be experiencing similar issues?
I'm worried.... ( know It's long.... bet I REALLY need help!)? I'm 16 and I've had Migraines for about 2 and a half years, about 3-5 PER WEEK!!! And I'm dizzy EVERY day!, I have had CT scans, EEG, ENG, and countless visits with neouriolgist. In the past 6 monts alone, i have been on 14 diffrent medications for both preventions and treatment of the headachs. And with the dizzieness, I trip and fall ALOT! well, recently, when I fall, I'm getting brused more than I used to. In fact, the other day my bf gave me a hug, and It left a bruse on my arm, he didn't even hug me hard, just normal, and it took almost a month to go away. I never bruse, and when I do, It goes away, like 10 days, TOPS! The first thing they checked when I hadachs was my vision, witch is perfect, but I seeing waves, black spots, and (like when us see that haze off the asfalt on a HOT day. )like that. and I've passed out/ blacked out like 3 times this month. I have another CT scan scaudeled for next week, and now I'm worried about what they'll see. I haven't had one since march. i haven't told my mom a lot of this stuff, because I don't what her to worrie. I can't do MRI's Or any other scan that requires magnates, because I have a pin in my arm. I'm SO seared!!! I just need someone to tell that everything's gonna be OK. (please note, I am asking this question for a friend of mine that I am VERY close to, In fact.... she's right here.) I'm not on 14 meds now... just 2, But that's how many I've been through. They can't find ANYTHING to help! I'm not on 14 meds now... just 2, But that's how many I've been through. They can't find ANYTHING to help! yeah, I've been checked for almost everything.... but no luck so far. They even put me on this special diet that only allows hypoallergenic foods (I don't get it) but that didn't help either.

Has anyone taken the drug Amitriptyline. What reactions (if any) did you have? My Dr. has prescribed Amitriptyline 10 mg tablets for migraine prevention. Supposed to take one or two a few hours before bed. I have probably 3 migraines a week, and they last anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, stopping me from enjoying things I like to do. It makes me very depressed and fed up. Don't know how much longer I can stand them. Have tried most migraine medications with no luck.
Son is taking CYPROHEPTADINE sun exposure effects? My son has been taking *Cyproheptadine* for migraine prevention. The side note states "You should avoid prolonged or excessive exposure to direct and or artificial sunlight while taking this medication. He has pe 30 minutes before school let's out and then he was going to play basketball but we took him out because he keeps getting headaches weekly. The practice would have been 1.5 hours long. He came home with a headache since 2:00 and I talked to him and we decided it'd be better to get out of the team (They barely put it together though) Anyways how long would prolonged or excessive sunlight be? What other kinds of things can he do that are not outside? People keep telling me that if there not in activites as a child they will start doing drugs, having sex etc but I have a hard time believing that I know skaters that skate every day and do drugs (well i dont know them but ive heard about it) I know people in band - that drink and have sex so i totally dont believe that.
I consistently have horrible migraines--what could cause them? I have these brutally horrible migraines multiple times a week, and constant headaches nearly 24/7 and photophobia even without headaches, my doctor has diagnosed me with Intractable migraines, because i have tried about... 8 medications for prevention and about 6 for pain none have worked, quite frankly their ruining my life and the doctor seems clueless as to the actual cause, i get enough sleep i eat right, and that's about all the questions that i can recall that ive been asked, there is one additional issue that id like to add, when i sleep i sleep so deeply that almost nothing can wake me up, to the point where my mother has to try constantly over the course of about an hour to just wake me up, also it is suspected that i have sleep apnea. Additional info Im 6 foot 2 I Weigh 380lbs Light and heat make headaches into migraines and migraines into paralyzing pain I can not loose weight, i have tried EVERYTHING and that's not a joke or an exaggeration (save surgeries) And now the migraines are so bad that i cant leave the house. They have done a few scans on my head but i cant remember names... So, i guess the question is what could cause them?
Just started new meds, but not sure if they should be mixed? History: Seizure in 2003 - Symptoms right before included dizzy spell with "migraine aura" included followed by the seizure. Put on Trileptal for 5 years. Been off for over a year now. I began getting my dizzy spells along with the "migraine aura" after the birth of my son in March 2009, and usually end up with a headache afterwards every few days. Starting at the end of May I began taking Lexapro which was my only medication at the time. Now the dizzy spells recently began happening every day and the headaches are every few days or last a few days in a row. Saw doctor today and was put back on Trileptal 300MG twice daily along with Verapamil once a day. Question is: Did the Lexapro cause the increase in dizzy spells or could it bring back possibility of a seizure? And, are all these medications safe to mix considering Lexapro is for anxiety, Trileptal is for prevention of seizures, and the Verapamil is for prevention of the headaches/migraines. Not sure if my doctors know if its safe to mix all these...I'm just nervous.
Need to get off propranolol--please help? Hi, all, I'm a healthy female in my 20s who takes propranolol (brand name: Inderal) 160mg extended release capsules for migraine prevention. I have been on these for three years. I have just lost my insurance, and do not have the money to pay out of pocket to see my neurologist to get a new prescription. Thus, I need to get off the propranolol. I have read that extended release capsules can't be cut and then the powder divided into new empty capsules, because the extended release mechanism would be ruined. I also know it isn't safe to just quit the medication cold-turkey, because it may cause heart problems. Does anyone have experience with this medication? I am going to call my neurologist anyway, but I know he's just going to tell me I have to come in, which I don't have the money for. Thanks, in advance. P.S. Of course, I know that Yahoo Answers is not a reliable source for medical advice. I just want to hear from people who have knowledge of this medication, so I can take that into consideration.
Are there any new treatments for Migraine headaches? I started having Migraines at 15. By the time I was 20 I was having them everyday. They just vary in pain levels; sometimes I have the full blown; pounding, cant, eat, sleep, nausea, light sensitivity etc. Where all I can to is hide in a dark, quiet room with an ice bag on my head, these can last for 3 days. While other times, it is moderate pain that I can treat with pain medication and be able to somewhat manage the day. I never drive while on narcotics. (I just don't want that to be an issue) Over the years I have been to numerous neurologists, had every conceivable scan and test. I have been in pain clinics, in Chicago, San Fransisco and Utah. I have been on every drug or herb that promised relief- or prevention, nothing helps. When Imitrex was introduced, it sounded like a miracle. The very first injection stopped my heart; even though I have no heart problems. It was a blessing that I was in the hospital when they tried it, so they could get my heart going again. Because of that extreme reaction I was cautioned to never try Triptans again. So I cannot use; Relpax, Axert, Frova, Amerge, Maxalt, Zomig or Treximet. I have heard that Botox helps. But there is no way I can afford the hundreds it would cost. Is anyone aware of anything new- I'm honestly at the end of my road- Thirty years of constant pain is too long. Thanks for your answers! Dares to care- I have also tried chiropractors, Some who did full adjustments, others sho did little clicking thing in my ears, saying they were minimpulating the small bones i my ears, neck etc. physical therasipts, acupunurists. I honestly don't know of a specialty I haven't seen.

I honestly think I have been on every medication, type, including the ergotomines, anti-depressents, calcium channel blockers, anit inflamitories. So many herbs among them fever few, really far too many to list. They had me on ms contin (a slow acting morphine that I used 3 times daily. Honestly everything. I was just wondering if there was any thing "new". I never want to give up trying to find relief. I do appreciate the time you both took to email me. I try and exercise both mentally and physically everyday, unless I am in too much pain to leave the dark. I have never tried the hot compress on the neck, I have always used ice on both my forehead and neck. I will give that a try. And I have been through chiropractic care too. Some who did full adjustments, others who did little clicking sounds in my ear, telling me they were adjusting the small bones of the inner ear and neck. Another had me hold a blow dryer and turned it on. He then said I was hyper sensitive to electricity, and I needed to avoid being around any electric appliances or towers. SIGH
Changing from dosulepin to amitriptyline for migraine prevention? I've been taking 25mg dosulepin for the last 2 months as migraine prevention. I went to my docs last week and she has advised me to change to 10mg amitriptyline instead as she thinks this medication will work better. Does anybody know how long I should wait before taking amitriptyline? I know that both medications are tricyclic anti depressants so am not sure if they will interact with each other if the dosulepin is still in my system. I took my last dose on Friday night........... Any help would be much appreciated :0) thanks xx
I just started getting migraines more frequently? Ok I have been a migraine sufferer for 20 years now, i am 27 and in the last 2 weeks I have gotten 4 which i only get them for the last 10 years 2 at the most in a year. I take medication when i start to lose my vision but I need something for prevention, other than pills that cost 10 bucks for one. I just started my new job and in my 3 month probation and had a migraine today and had to leave work and am stressing not to get another one but cannot control when i get them. Is there a solution?
What medications and treatment would be the best for my horrible migraines? I am an 18 year old male who suffers from chronic migraines with aura. I'm going to the doctor soon about my terrible migraines and I'm curious as to what they're likely to do and what their likely to prescribe me for prevention and pain control. I have gone in numerous times for my terrible migraines, however nothing has ever been done and I've recently changed doctors but have only seen my new doctors nurse practitioner. First, let me fill you in on my symptoms. An attack for me starts with an aura which completely blinds my left eye, and this comes on usually all of a sudden without a preceding headache. The aura will start out as a small colorful dot in my field of view on the left side and grow until my vision in my left eye is almost fully disrupted. My aura phase lasts about 30 mins. to an hour, then it goes away and is immediately followed by the pain and nausea phase. The pain is ABSOLUTELY UNBEARABLE, it always occurs on and around my right temple. It feels as though someone has jammed a screw-driver in my head and is repeatedly twisting it. It is completely regular for me to vomit as many as 6 times during an attack. There is nothing I can do to treat the pain. I've tried Tylenol, Advil, an Ice bag, A warm wash cloth they're all equally useless. And once the pain has begun there is no use in attempting to take pain pills as I am unable to keep anything down. I kind of anxious about my doctors appointment because my previous doctor was horrible and never did anything for me, however she was a pediatrician and even though I was 16 when i first started getting them and seeing her my insurance DEMANDED I see a pediatrician, and I would like some advice on what I should expect them to do, and what I should tell them and what I should ask about. Please I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Thank you.
Do I have any other options for migraine preventatives? I am a 25 year old female that has suffered from migraines since the age of 15. I have been on several medications over the years to control the migraines. I finally found a successful preventative medication and have been on it since 2007.My only preventative is Verapamil 240 mg twice daily. My doctor tried me on 240 mg three times daily but it was causing my blood pressure to drop too much. My abortive medication is the 6 mg Imitrex injection and Ultram for pain. List of preventatives tried and failed: Topamax Depakote Zanaflex Magnesium supplements Klonipin Cardizem LA Zonegran Namenda Keppra oxyen therapy Health Conditions: Asthma Severe indoor and outdoor allergies Hypertension High cholesterol Depression Anxiety Sciatica Medication allergies: Sulfa antibiotics tricyclic antidepressants SNRI medications Ergotamine medications Current medications and doses Trazodone 100 mg daily for sleep Celexa 40 mg daily for depression/anxiety Verapamil 240 mg twice daily for migraine prevention/hypertension Advair 250/50 twice daily for asthma Proventil inhaler-rescue medication for asthma Singulair 10 mg daily for allergies/ asthma Zyrtec 10 mg daily for allergies Pravastatin 40 mg for high cholesterol Lyrica 75 mg three times daily for sciatica Flexeril 10 mg three times daily for muscle spasms daily multivitamin daily fish oil Imitrex injection 6 mg as needed for migraine Ultram 50 mg if needed Nexium 20 mg daily The problem I am having now is the return of daily headaches with severe migraines about once a week. And they are not rebound headaches. I have had experience with those before and I don't care to repeat that. I am only taking pain medication and abortive medication about once a week so I can try to keep from experiencing rebound headaches.I also suffer from a TMJ disorder and wear an NTI device at night. I just had it refitted at the dentist so I know that teeth grinding is not causin the headaches. I keep a daily pain journal, a daily headache log, and a food log so I cazn avoid my trigger foods. Do I have any options left that I may be able to try for PREVENTATIVES that I can discuss with my doctor at my appointment at the end of next month?

I need help with chronic daily headaches!! I don't know what to do anymore!!? I am 24 years old. I have been experiencing headaches since the 7th grade. My headaches usually involve migraine pain in the right back side of my head, facial pain, jaw pain, and neck pain. I have been on more medications than I can even remember for prevention and treatment of the headaches. I have sen all sorts of doctors, a physical therapist, pain specialist, orthopedist, neurologist, and probably more. I am at my witts end! I just had sinus surgery 2 weeks ago in hopes it would help, I don't think it has. There has to be someone out there who has a similar problem that could possibly help?? Thank you everyone!
Anti epileptic medication for the prevention of migraines? For the past 10 years or so I've suffered with migraine headaches but over the last year or so they have been getting worse both in pain and frequency and this is after I have already eliminated as many "triggers" as I can think of. Now for the past few months I've been going back and forward to the doctor, over the years I've tried several preventative and abortive medications and after a week or so they stop working. My doctor advised me that she'll now be referring me onto a specialist at the hospital who will be able to prescribe me anti epileptic meds as a treatment as they have been know to be an effective preventative. What I'd like to know is what are the side effects (long and short term) associated with these types of medication? How effective are they in preventing migraine? And if these don't work what would the next step be? I should probably mention I'm in the UK and there are fewer medications for migraine available here - something to do with our health boards guildlines would also like to request genuine links to websites and not for online perscription shopping, thnx
The other day, I collapsed completely out of the blue. Why? I don't really know what happened. I'd been eating well, sleeping and exercising healthily and regularly, so I'm not sure what could have caused it. I was singing with my choir, and they said I just crumpled to the ground and began twitching and convulsing. I didn't remember what happened, so I assume I blacked out. The only medication I'm taking is for migraine prevention, but I have been on this a long time with no such problems. Any suggestions before I see a doctor?
Denied Health Coverage Due To Migraine Medication? Okay, so I applied for health insurance yesterday and was denied. First question the representative asked was if I take any medication. I stated "Yes, for migraine prevention. I take 1 tablet daily before I go to sleep." She then IMMEDIATELY denied me. I asked why and she did not give me very much detail. All I know is that it's related to the migraine medication. MY QUESTION: Why would I get denied when I'm taking medication to PREVENT my migraines? Thanks in advance.
Topamax for migraines? I have a lot of ongoing migraines and headaches and my neurologist has suggested topamax or zonegran for prevention. I just want some honest answers from people who have actually taken this medication(s) on how it worked and the side effects you experienced. I generally don't like taking medications on a daily basis but am tired of taking pain killers for my headaches and feel that taking something to prevent a headache might be safer (I currently take vicodin for my headaches) I am not looking for people's advice on alternative methods of treatment nor am I looking for a lecture on my medications. I have been under the care of a very good neurologist for years and don't need any medical advice. Just honest feedback from patients who have used this medication and their experience with it, I am tired of my head pain ruining much of my life. Thanks! Chant....if you really are a doctor then you would know that maxalt is not good for frequent usage..
Help understanding medication directions? My doctor prescribed me Topamax (topiramate) for migraine prevention. I understand the first part of the directions on the bottle but i don't understand the second part. The directions are: Take one tablet by mouth at bedtime for 7 days(which i did), then increase to 1 tab by mouth 2 times daily. I think this means take one tab in the morning and one tab at night, but im not sure. Or it could mean take two tabs in the morning. Does anyone know? Anyone who has similar directions for their meds?
Why would they prescribe medication that isn't 100% effective or safe? I was recently raped and I was prescribed two medications: Combivir and Keletra. They are HIV prevention medications, however are not 100% effective or safe. They have side effects such as: vomiting, migraines, sleep disorders, eating disorders, change in mood, and also weight change. There are many more but those are just a few. If anyone has been on these two before, please let me know if you would recommend the follow through of taking them. The doctor said it is my choice, but my only issue is: If it is not 100% effective or safe, why bother??? Thank you for your help in advance!!

Read both if you can! Headache issues since 7th grade: got an MRI. Gradually got migraines here and there (meaning they got more painful), three years ago they got pretty bad, last year they got excruciating to the max and more often. I just got an MRI but don't have results yet, I can always post it if that's helpful to anyone. Added note here: I have pain most of the time literally and I think it would almost be 24/7 with out medicine. If you can help me or have advice, I'm going to cover what I've done in case you/someone thinks that's the answer. *Imitrex - Works for moderate/normal migraines but I’ve stopped taking because of this next one; *Atenolol : Prevention for migraines, but its generally a heart/blood pressure medication. I have tried different dosages. It helped me have a little less, but my life is still not livable. *Topamax: Didn’t work, made me emotionally unstable-was generic though. *Lithium: Sometimes-can help when I combine with Tramadol. Can only take it once a night for sleep. *Tramodol: As stated, was prescribed it after the hospital. For whatever reason the family doctor makes me ask for a refill every time I need it, even though I can’t take freaking Imitrex with Atenolol bc I feel bad. He never told me that! I would have 3 refills on it too, I could’ve damaged my heart. Tramodol works on some migraines; for really bad ones I take 2 ASAP or nothing happens. Even then it can come back. *Oxycotin/Hydrocode/Oxycodone: Has worked the highest percentage of the time, failed twice out of maybe two months (which is amazing for me right now) and that’s when I went to the hospital. Sometimes when I’ve tried all day or a WEEL to get rid of pain 1/2 can work. However, there are times I’ve needed two or three. I’ve heard this term a few times, “rebound headaches”. But I basically have constant pain anyway and I’m eating Tramadol like chips to take the edge of. I think THAT’S WORSE. It’s so incredibly bad I don’t care about anything but relief. That might sound irresponsible but trust me, I know pain. Fractured (cracked) bones, foot ran over by a car, hyper extended knew--which is the knew going the wrong way. It really doesn’t compare to that pain because its so constant and something about a migraine is just worse. *I’ve been on Cymbalta and another anti-depressant and Lamictal. Cymbalta didn't help mood enough or pain at all and Lamictal is helping mood and back pain and not migraines. Hospital visits are like, 100 bucks co-pay and then a lot more after that. So many times I want to go and I can’t, I have to hold my head and breath because I have barely any medicine and people freak out with oxycodone, but I don’t because I can’t exercise, play sports, read, watch TV sometimes... I’d almost rather die than worry about anything else. Over the counter epically fails for me. How can I approach doctors or what can I ask for? Thanks!
What migraine prevention drug can be used on an asthmatic person? Beta-blockers are not an option when you are asthmatic So what medication is then given to prevent migraines? My doctor has said he will be consulting someone about it but I would like to know what kind of options will be available so that I don't have to think on the spot when it comes to deciding.
Very strange menstrual period? I'm 19 years old, going on 20 in may, I had my first period when I was 13, and since then I've never had any problems, complications, or anything REALLY out of the normal that wasn't caused by diet, stress, or exercise (or lack of it sometimes), the only thing that would be considered "odd" is that my period would come within 35-45 days. But this month, my period has been very strange. A week ago it appeared within that span of days (about the 38th day), but for some reason... I began to spot for about a day, but it stopped. The next day I had uterine lining, but no blood? I didn't have any blood leaking out onto my panties or into the toilet, but I had what looked like uterine lining that comes out with the blood in the toilet and on the toilet paper. That continued for about 2 days, but it abruptly ended. After that I began to spot again for about two more days, and that abruptly ended as well. I was period-free, or at least so I thought. On the 7th, I began to bleed a normal amount and had the uterine lining and the whole nine yards, and I began to spot again. I thought it was almost over (yesterday)... Until I apparently began to bleed again (this morning). There is no lining, just blood. I am not stressed. I have been drinking plenty of water I have not changed my diet. I have not changed my exercise routine. But I HAVE changed my medication for migraine prevention, I am on a beta-blocker called Propanolol. I had this medicine change on the 3rd of march. Could this be the culprit of my weird period? That is the only thing that I can guess, only because I have never been on a beta-blocker before, and my other methods of migraine prevention were anti-epileptics/anti-depressants. I usually spot during the first day (before it gets heavy) and my period is heavy for a couple of days and begins to taper until it is finished. My menstruation usually lasts within 4-5 days. I don't have sex with men. I can't be pregnant. The "tissue" is usually brownish or dark, deep red. I've always had this. The "tissue" is most likely mucous (or clotting), since it has a mucousy viscosity. Last edit, I swear!
Taking 10mg/day Amitriptyline for migraine prevention, will it improve depression? I've been really depressed for months and have been seeing a counsellor who really doesn't like the idea of medication. I also suffer chronic debilitating migraines (which are a contributing factor to the depression). My general physician put me on Amitriptyline for the prevention of migraines. Just 10 mg once a day. I've been too shy to say much to her about my diagnosed depression. I know that Amitriptyline is an antidepressant. Should I notice my depression symptoms improve or is this dose too low? It's not a big deal due to the fact that getting rid of daily pain should improve my mood considerably, but I'm still curious. If it matters, I'm a 115 lb 19-year-old female.

Do I need immediate medical attention? Subluxation, chronic migraine history, sudden nose bleeds? Medical History Over View: To begin, I am a 20 year old male with a chronic history of sever migraines. I have recently confirmed that I DO NOT have any brain tumors or other growths, via MRI and optimap optical examinations [I also have 20/20 vision]. I had my first MRI when I was three years old, and my mother also suffers from chronic migraines. When I was four years old, I was hospitalized due to an extremely invasive sinus infection. As a result I no longer have (or have very little) feeling or sensation around my sinuses, beyond skin sensations like hot and cold; with the exception of extremely painful stimuli, such as a blunt metal object impacts. I have successfully minimized my migraine attacks through various prevention methods that do not rely on medication. I have very low blood pressure, a low BMI, and have a very healthy, thoroughly planned diet. This last semester I suffered from a condition known a BPPV [Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo] which is much like motion/car sickness for those who have, like myself, suffered from its affects. I went to physical therapy, and the condition has been treated. After reviewing my medical history, my therapist informed me that my migraines, sever childhood car sickness (which I outgrew), and BPPV were all related. Years ago, my various M.D.'s confirmed that a large proportion, but not all of, my migraines are caused by stress on my eye control muscles. My therapist told me that this is likely do to some sort of subluxation, which affected my facial structure, followed by the bone refusing improperly. I have longed believed that the right side of my face is injured, mainly due to my jaw being equal in length, but not position. Additionally my right eye socket is, in the words of my optometrist, "crooked." I am aware no two sides of anyones face are exactly the same. The last 4 days I have had extremely painful migraines above and next to my right eye, and upper sinus nose bleeds (which dry before they reach my nostrils.) I am fully aware of when my nose bleeds. The bleeding is sort in duration [under 5 min], and is not frequent [every 6-8+ hours] I have treated migraines with Zomig 5mg and 10mg tablets for years, which works 99% of time. However it has not been very effective the last few days, and this worries me greatly. The pain has been near unbearable around my eye, and my jaw also hurts. I have a appointment with my primary care physician monday morning, but I am worried that I may need to seek medical attention sooner, and have considered contacting emergency services. My primary care doctor said that if I become light headed, dizzy, suddenly cold, or have blurry vision I need to take immediate action. I have felt none of those things, and feel as mentally sound as one can while having a migraine. Do I need to go to the hospital or get medical attention before monday?
