What is the best migraine medication you have tried, and why is it the best? I've had migraines off and on for years, due to a car accident. The last 2 years, the migraines have cropped up more often and my doctor will prescribe a migraine med for me to have on hand. The problem is, she says that they are all very similar. So, the question for yahoo users is, in your personal migraine experiences, what prescription migraine medication worked best, and were there side effects, etc? Thanks!
Do doctors always prescribe a pain medication along with migraine med for migraines? I am going to the doctor soon for my migraines. I am getting the migraines about once a week. In my research doctors seem to often prescribe a pain medication like hydrocodone along with the migraine medication. Those of you suffer from migraines does the pain medication help? I am really not comfortable with taking pain medication like that. So I was wondering if it actually help anyone.
Is it safe to take my migraine medication? From time to time I get migraines. I'm trying to get pregnant, and I was ovulating last week- so I don't know if i'm pregnant yet or not- if I get a migraine this week, is it safe to take the medication? I take Zomig- so it's not a store bought medication. Just wondering if it could effect anything this early if I am pregnant.
What is a good migraine medication that is comparable to Topamax, without the side effects? I had been taking Topamax for migraines. I was on 400mg a day and it helped really well, but recently found I have a kidney stone due to using Topamax so I am trying to find a different med. I can take for it. For those of you that don't know, Topamax is used to prevent migraines, not to help with the pain. If anyone has personal experience I would prefer your answer. I don't want answers like imitrex, maxalt, zomig, as these are to treat the pain after you have gotten a migraine. I want an answer for a med to prevent the migraines. Thanks in advance.
Whats the quickest way to relieve a migraine without medication? I suffer from frequent migraines, i have been to my doctor and they suggested taking mersyndols, which are strong pain medication. I am sick of taking all these pills, as i hate to think what this is doing to my liver. I have a very healthy diet, i dont not smoke, drink or do drugs. I do regular exercise. Does anyone know of any natural ways to relieve migraine!! the pain is 10 outta 10!! Just wanted to say thankyou to the first answer, im not sure how to give the 10 points iv just recently got onto level 2. I found it helpfull and wrote down all the things i had eaten during the day. I havent drank caffeine in ages, and i think that was big factor and also dehydration!! Thankyou!!
best way to get rid of a migraine withOUT medication? I have heard of things like drinking peppermint tea or rosemary tea, does anyone know which one work better or does anyone know of any other home remedy or medication-free way of getting rid of a migraine? Thanks
What migraine medication works best for you? There are so many new prescription ones on the market and I have tried most. Curious to know if the newest ones are any effective? Yes I realize everyone is different, just curious what most of you take. Thanks
Cheap prescription migraine medication? I suffer from migraine headaches. The insurance through my work does not cover migraine medication at all (and there is no way to upgrade the insurance to a plan that pays for it). Does anyone know of any cheap prescription medication for migraines? I know that rizatriptan (Maxalt) works really well for me, but it costs $117 for 6 pills.
eye migraine and when to take medication? I just had an eye migraine and i usually get a massive head ache 15-20 min after my vision returns. I also get nauseous and cold. I have a script for maxalt. When should i take this medication? I have only had this happen 2 times in my life. Right now i just feel sick to my stomach.
How can I achieve severe migraine relief after trying so many medication combos? I have at least 2-3 severe migraines a week. Over the past 3-4 years they have continuously increased in frequency and severity. I have been on numerous combinations of medications to stop and prevent the pain with no relief. At my neurologist's request I have even tried Botox. I was hospitalized for 5 days in November with a Dihydroergotamine (DHE)(migraine med) and Reglan(antinausea med) IV hooked up to me. I'm tired of taking meds that don't work and I don't want to start taking pain meds on a regular basis just to get through the day. My quality of life is next to nothing. A few weeks ago I had a day where I woke up before 7am on my own, I felt great and was full of energy up until around 8pm when my migraine cam back with vengence. I have become so accustomed to feeling bad that I wasn't aware of how bad until I had that day. I want my life back. What other alternatives may be out there to help me? I've tried several low dose antidepressants, low dose blood pressure meds, low dose anti-seizure meds and other preventitives. I've tried Imitrex, maxalt, epidren, fioricet, DHE injections, Zomig as well as others for the migraines and they don't help. I was put on actual antidepressants before thinking it might help the situation and it made it worse. I became emotional and moody as a result. The low dose antidpressants were the same. Pain meds are a joke! I take them and they don't really touch the pain, just make me dopey if even that and that's only the first few times I take it then it doesn't work and I would need to take more each time to feel any effect. I refuse to go there. It seems to me that my body adjusts to any meds so quickly that it's not effective or I will have a reverse effect.
My doctor won't give me migraine medication? I have migraines a lot. I go to the doctor and tell him about the headaches, and he checks my BP (which is really high because of the pain), and gives me BP medication. I need something for the headaches, not the BP. How do I convince him that I really need this, or how do I go about switching doctors. He basically ignores my claims of migraines or headaches. I know they are migraines, I have actually missed work because of them. He has done many blood tests and says he can't figure out why my BP is high. I'm sick of taking the BP meds (water pills) and nothing brings down my BP. For those of you who don't know much about medical instances, your blood pressure rises when you're in pain. That is how the doctors and nurses can tell when you're really in pain and when you're only seeking meds.
Have some questions about perscription migraine medication.? I have horrible migraines all of the time. I have tried many otc medications and none have provided me adaquate relief. I have heard of prescription migraine medication, and was wondering what kinds are out there and if anyone has used them, do they work? I am due for my annual visit to my Gyno and was going to ask her about it, but wasn't sure she could perscribe anything, seeing as this is not her "expertise". Does anyone have any useful information?
I Can't Afford My Prescription Migraine Medication - Anyone Know Of A OTC Alternative? I suffer from acute Migraines and my insurance does not cover it. It comes to over $600 for a month supply. I simply cannot afford that but my migraines are so bad that i can't even get up sometimes. Does anyone know of a over-the-counter equivalent? I just don't want to keep taking Tylenol. -Please help- The prescription given to me by my doctor is: Rizatriptan Benzoate
need help with new migraine medication... zomig? i've recently been put on a migraine medication, and i'm supposed to take it suring the aura or the pain phase. I am unfamiliar with migraine medication and wondering if the medication will help with all the other phases of the migraine, or just the pain phase? The pain of the migraine I can handle for the most part, it's the postdome or whatever the last phase is that really bothers me... it takes me days to recover from a migraine, and wondering if the Zomig would help with that?

I have the most uncomfortable & scariest dreams when I take my migraine medication. Can anyone tell me why? I've been taking a migraine medication for about a little less than a year now. I take one every time I feel a migraine coming on and it knocks me out cold. I sleep for about 6-7 hours..but I have the most obscene dreams. Nightmares is what I have most..and I never have nightmares unless I've taken the medication. These nightmares are very vivid..can anyone tell me why? Migraine: What is the cure? How do I get rid of it? Any specific medication or remedy? I have been suffering from migraine since I was 13 years old. Back then, the migraine had been constant but did not last long and it was easy to cure with plain paracetamol. Over the years, the migraine lessened but seem to last longer than it had been before and I have also grown immune to paracetamol thus, changed my medication to ponstan. When ponstan stopped having effects on my migraine, a local pharmacist prescribed me with a different medication which later on lead me to the hospital because I was allergic to it. Now, the migraine attacks are less frequent but very excrutiating everytime it strikes. My family doctor prescribed me with cafergot initially and it worked well until it too had stopped having effect on the migraine. I have had enough with prescriptions and medications and was wondering if there is a way to get rid of it. For your info, my migraine is associated with symptoms like bleeding mucus, seeing stars and nasal pain. For your information, whenever I take caffeine, the migraine worsen. Any other suggestions? I'm not quite keen with another medication since I'm worried there might not be any more effect on me after 2-3 months later.
migraine medication in pregnancy? hi all, i'm wondering if anyone continues to use their migraine meds in pregnancy. my doctor told me it was ok, as long as they are rare. i don't know. i'm scared. anyone?
really painful migraine- how do i get rid of it? I've had a migraine for three days now and It just worsened. My dad only allowed me to take half the recomended dosage of my migraine medication, so naturally, I'm still in pain. I don't know what to do. It's midnight here and my parents are asleep. I feel really sick, so is there an easy temporary fix for a bad migraine that would get me through the night?
Does anyone know the cost of Prodrin migraine medications? I've taken these before but my doctor just gave me samples. I'm going to pick up my prescription tomorrow and just wonder if anyone else has been on this and knows how expensive it is. I don't have insurance so I always get nervous before I see the reciept! Thanks!
How can I counter act migraine meds? I started getting a severe migraine this evening. It hurt too much to sleep, so I broke down and took my migraine medication. Unfortunately, since I no longer ingest caffeine I am now wide awake. How can I counter act the caffeine and get some sleep?
Any unconventional migraine headache remedies? I"ve had a steady headache for about 5 days now. Usually I'll take some maxalt(migraine medication) and naproxen(aleve) and it'll be gone within about an hour. Although its been helping, the headache returns a couple hours later. I've since tried ibuprofen and acetaminophen. I've gotten to the point where I just don't kow what else to do anymore!
Migraine prevention medication question?!? Hey guys. I have had migraines for 10 yrs. I have tried preventative--- topamax, depokate and inderal. My doctor put me on 20 mg of inderal, and it didn't do ANYTHING. My mom went on blood pressure medications and her headaches have virtually disappeared... I have changed doctors since..and have read online about it--most people take between 160-240 mg of inderal per day (at least 80 mg) for migraine prevention. My NEW doctor had offered to put me on it but I said no (not realizing the difference in mg's was THAT big)... I have also read that Elavil is good for migraines and sleep (and depression). I have trouble sleeping and of course, have ridiculous migraines. Plus, I have suffered from depression (but I they have diagnosed me with having bipolar, if i take a SSRI -bipolar IV - i believe). I am wondering what peoples exp's are w/migraine prevention--specifically inderal and elavil. Trying to decide what to try first, if anything at all... Oh by the way--background info on my medications: I am not taking any medication for depression. they tried to put me on mood stabilizers but they made my brain foggy and I couldnt handle it. I don't feel 100% now but I feel better than being on depakote, seruqel, and lamictal (the meds they tried me on). I am only on Imitrex 100 mg, and phenegran 25 mg--as needed. Also, I take fiorcet w/aspirin for non-migraine headaches. Plus, topamax and depokate did NOT stop my migraines!
Migraine Medication that is safe to take with ADHD drug? I am a 33 yr old female adult diagnosed with Adhd about 5 yrs ago, and currently Take Vyvanse for ADHD symptoms. I have had migraines since I was 8, more frequently the past 5 years, I would say I get them 2-3 times a week. Sometimes more in a week, sometimes less. I was told not to take my Amerge Prescription years ago, when I started my ADHD meds, but I am getting TIRED of suffering through these headaches without any relief, but I can not go odd my ADHD medication, as it is more important. I dont have insurance or a Doctor to ask, and Vyvanse is new so pharmacists seem to be unsure. If I knew of a drug that you would not be a bad interaction, I would go to a dr. but dont want to waste $ if there is not one.
Migraine medication without caffeine? I don't get migraines very often, but every once in awhile I get a really bad one. Excedrin works great during the day, but the caffeine in it keeps me up if I take it before bedtime. Are there any over-the-counter migraine medications that work well and don't have any caffeine?
What is this migraine medication? I am pretty sure this is a medication that I have been on in the past that for some reason my doctors have lost record of. I really need to know what it is called so I can tell my current doctor. Thanks! http://www.flickr.com/photos/brittanyculver/3061565121/
What's a good way to get rid of a head ache or Migraine without medication? I always get migraines. and it's because of sinus' but I don't have sinuses anymore. When I have a headache I usually take advil or tylenol, but I decided that all these pills are enough. Is there a better way to get rid of a head ache? Like a nap, hot showers, etc...? P.S, my head hurts right now! :(
Long term migraine medication? Is there any long term migraine medication available that would require you taking four weeks off work to adjust? Someone I know has said they are on it. I think she's taking time off work for another reason. But I don't experience migraines so I'm not sure. Have any sufferers out there heard of anything like this?

What is the name of that migraine medication on the new commercial? My friend gets migraines and I saw some commercial that said with 1 dose of this stuff you can get rid of a migraine. It was called something like excetera, acceteran, exceterin, or something that's pronounced like that but I can't find it. How do you spell it exactly?
How do I cure the nausea caused by my migraine medication? I take Zomig for migraines and it makes me really sick. The stomach ache I get from the medicine is like a hungover feeling - like I'm hungry when I'm not and I feel like I'm going to throw up. I took Relpax before switching to Zomig because my doctor thought it might not make me sick, but both of them do. The only thing that doesn't make me sick is Imitrex Nasal Spray, but my insurance only covers 6 of those and I need to take 2 for my migraine to go away. Should I switch my migraine medication again or should I take something to help with the nausea, and if so what should I take?
Migraine medication isn't working too well? Hi everyone. I've been getting horrible migraines in the last week (I've suffered from them since I was 12 but they are worse than ever now). I have prescription meds that really aren't doing the job. I've tried just about everything. Excedrin Migraine seems to be working the best but has lots of caffeine which I'm sensitive to and I need to sleep when I have migraines. Any suggestions would be great! I'm willing to try anything. Also, they tend to get much worse before and during my period. Thank you.
Can a sinus headache develop into a migraine? I have really bad allergies, and I get sinus headaches often. They become unbearable and make me sick to my stomach and really sensitive to light. Someone told me that my sinus headache can develop into a migraine. Is this true?? If so, should i focus on taking sinus medication or migraine medication?? I don't like taking medicine unless it's absolutely necessary.
Thyroid medication and antidepressents/migraine medication combination side effects? I have been on Levoxyl for months to treat a goiter problem. I am on numerous medications for my migraines but I'm still getting them. My neurologist mailed me script for a new medication, amitriptyline (Elavil), as another preventative to take and I had this feeling to check for any interactions and all the websites I've found said they shouldn't be taken together. Nowhere does it say why and what will happen though. I see my endocrinologist Monday for a check-up and will definitely ask her what to do. I thought my neurologist would have checked my file to see what other meds I take but apparently not. Does anyone know the side effects of them taken together and what else I can take on top of Neurontin, Naproxen, and Imitrex to fight my headaches? I do not have depression but 99% of migraine meds are also antidepressants.
Shaky and lightheaded after taking migraine medication? First let me start off by saying that I stopped drinking caffeine in March 2010 because my addiction to caffeine was actually causing me to have migraine headaches if I didn't drink enough caffeine during the day. Now I try to avoid taking migraine medication at all costs because I obviously don't like what it does to my body. I still get migraines every now and then and today when I took the correct dose of a generic migraine relief medication containing acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine I got shaky and lightheaded. Is this normal? I'm 24 years old and I've suffered from migraines for about eight years now. I also get a migraine on the left side of my head particularly in the back and I've read that it's normal to have them on one side or the other, is this true? Sometimes it feels like my brain is bleeding under the skull and after the migraine starts to subside it feels like my brain is bruised. Is this a normal sensation?
Denied Health Coverage Due To Migraine Medication? Okay, so I applied for health insurance yesterday and was denied. First question the representative asked was if I take any medication. I stated "Yes, for migraine prevention. I take 1 tablet daily before I go to sleep." She then IMMEDIATELY denied me. I asked why and she did not give me very much detail. All I know is that it's related to the migraine medication. MY QUESTION: Why would I get denied when I'm taking medication to PREVENT my migraines? Thanks in advance.
What is the best medication or therapy for migraine headaches? I've had migraines for over 3 months now non-stop, and lots of times the headaches come when I get abdominal pains. What is a good migraine medication? I recently found out that the migraine medication I have been using is no longer being made. I have a doc apt coming up soon and would like a good recommendation for a replacement med. The type of migraines I get are the cluster type and I get major light sensitivity. Please help, I am a full time student and I work 2 jobs. I have tried holistic therapy and massage....nothing works but this medication and now it is gone. Midrin is the medication no longer being made.
What can help with a migraine besides Medication? I've been on Imitrex for the past two years now because of my migraines. I stopped taking my BC pills (doctors orders) and it helped reduce the amount of migraines I was getting but I'm having a bad one today & even with my medication it wont go away. Any remedies or things you know about that will help?
Migraine medication info? I have been taking the medication Zonisamide to treat frequent migraines. While this medication has done what the neurologist said it would--take away migraines-- I have noticed my grades in school have dropped. The recent decline in grades is not drastic, but it is noticeable. I was wondering if anyone knew if side effects included slower thought processing and whatnot. Thank you!

Migraine medication without weight gain? Does anyone know of a migraine medication that has no weight gain besides topamax? I've been on topamax for 8 years and have the side effects of kidney stones which I get constantly, constant hair loss and memory loss.
Is it okay to take Migraine Medication for Headache? I get really bad headaches sometimes but I'm not sure they are exactly Migraines. So my question is is it safe to take medication geared towards Migraines like Excedrin Migraine. I have tried regular Excedrin and others but i need something strong to take the pain away.
