chronic back pain Knowledge Base

What do you do for your chronic back pain to cope day to day? Have lots of back problems. I have 6 hernieted discs(that I know, we have never done an MRI of the thoracic spine). I had a fusion in my neck and I also have a hemangioma on one of my vertebrae that is causing pain. The back pain causes arm and leg pain, my right leg goes numb all the time and then my left leg picks up the slack, making my knee hurt. I am 28 and have been dealing with the worst of this for 3 years. I know this will be a life long battle. All of those that have had chronic pain for many more years then me, what have you done and what are you with pain control efforts? What kind of road am I heading down I guess is what I want to know? Just so everyone knows, I do work 12 hour shifts 3 days a week at a hospital, so I am pretty much on the run during those times. I have 3 children. The 2 oldest are in school and walk them to the bus stop. I clean my house, do yard work, walk the dogs, Everything that everyone else does. I am not just sitting on a couch crying all day. I have been working on losing my many extra pounds and have lost about 30 pounds and instead of the pain getting better with less weight, it is getting worse. So, basically, I just want to know where everyone has been in a journey like mine.
Would a full length bra with a strapless feature ease chronic pain on my shoulders and back? I have medium figure with large breasts that cause me constant upper back and shoulder pain that cannot be relieved no matter what regular bra I wear. I have tried all different sizes, and types but have not had any luck. I have seen full length strapless bras with straps as an option, but have been reluctant to buy them for their price. Would they ease the severe chronic pain but still provide support? Has anyone had any luck with them? And if not, can anyone suggest an alternative?
How do you treat chronic back pain after having an epidural? I had an epi with my last birth 2 years ago and have suffered chronic back pain since. Have seen a chiro and physio but the pain is still there.
What else can I do to get rid of chronic back pain? I'm more or less at my wits end. Every doctor I go to tells me that the xrays and MRI are showing nothing wrong with me and that I need to exercise. I'm 22 years old, I shouldn't be having chronic back pain that has no apparent cause. And at very least if it were a muscle strain I'd figure that 8 months would have been plenty of time for it to heal. I'm not in that bad of shape, I walk 2 or 3 miles a day. I have more or less written off medication as a simple mask of the problem. The problem to me isn't the pain, it's whatever is causing the pain. In a way I'd rather deal with the pain until the real problem is identified and gotten rid of so it can serve as a reminder. I'm not sure my exercising is helping any and for some reason my doctors seem to think I'm making it up or they just want to perscribe me more pain killers. Is there anything else I can do on my own to combat back pain?
What is a way to cure chronic back pain besides physio/osteo etc.? I am still relatively young, but have suffered chronic back pain for almost 3 years. What are the requirements of being disable, due to chronic back pain? I have been suffering from chronic back pain ever since I can remember. I also have scoliosis. I'm only 25 and I think that I am to young to have this kind of pain. I have been in 2 car accidents in my life, one when I was 15 and I was knocked unconsious and another when I was 19. Both I had very bad back pain. I have got MRI's done and everything . I constantly go to the doctors office. I even filed for disability, and have been denied. So is there anyone out there that recieves disability, and what were the requirements to get through a bad situation like mines.

Has anyone decreased their chronic back pain through exercise? I only want to hear from people who have tried exercise as a treatment for chronic back pain. Did it work for you? Do you do cardio, weights or both? Which back-specific exercises helped? I need some motivation to start exercising but I don't want to start unless I know it's going to help.
How can you tell if its regular pregnancy back pain or your chronic back pain? plus how can you tell if its ? normal stretching pain or if its pain from you surgery plus stretching pain? i have chronic back pain i was just wondering if ill be able to tell when i go into labor later on if i have back labor or not? plus with the stretching pain i had an eptopic surgically removed in May and now im having the normal pregnancy cramping and stretching pains plus its alittle more in the area where i had my surgery? its not bad its just something i was wondering about.
Help! My husband is miserable with chronic back pain, what could be the cause or diagnosis? My husband has been having chronic lumbar pain for about a month now and has been in and out of not only the doctors office, but also the emergency room. He's missed a lot of work, and could now possibly lose his job. He is a chef and woks in a kitchen 40+ hrs a week. He's been perscribed Flexeril 10mg, Vicodin 500mg and 750mg, Motrin 800, Tramdol 50mg, and Robaxin 750mg. Im starting to get worried that this is going to hurt his body more, seeing as how it doesnt help much. He has recently had a nerve test done, but the results just show mild pain. He's at the point where he'd rather be paralyzed than in this kind of pain. The doctors wont give him a MRI (if that would even help). Im wondering if anyone has had similar symptoms and if so, what was the outcome? What steps should we be taking?
What can my husband do for his chronic low back pain? On my husbands MRI it said Large Herniated Disk( L4). All the doctor has done for him is give him pain killers. There has to be something eles he can do . The doctor also said he is to young for back surgery so all he has done is write him pain pills every month there after. There has to be something eles besides having to take pills for the rest of his life. I really hate feeling so helpless. When he is in pain its chronic. It really hurts me because I cant take the pain away. I would give him my back in a second. Thanks to anyone who can give some helping words.
How can I be relieved of chronic pain due to trigger points in neck and back? Or, do I have a brain tumor? Any Doctors or Rheumotologists out there to help please? I have lupus which makes my osteoarthritis in my neck and back worse. My Doctor told me I have malignant knots, and I was given trigger point injections in neck and back. He accidently stuck the needle in my lung, and I ended up in the hospital. (No law suit). - I have also been in physical therapy, message therapy, do yoga, and lift weights, I have been on medication to reduce inflammation and relaxe muscles. Nothing has worked. I have had this pain for 3 years straight. - I developed this problem after my husband died of cancer. Also, my aunt of 48 died after being diagnosed with 19 brain tumors. I am the same age, and I pay Kaiser $600.00 a month out of my own pocket to keep my health benefits. My Dr. visits and med's also cost alot of money. I am going broke and my pain is a 12 on a scale of 1 - 10. - Is there a specific test I shoud ask for, or can I get rid of this problem and live a normal life. I get dizzy and see stars!

What's the difference between chronic back pain and sciatica? I have been experiencing strong and consistent back pain for as long as I can remember (I am 25 now). It starts with a little discomfort in my lower back, and about 20 minutes later, if I don't take pain medication, my joints will start to ache on one side (my hip, my knee, my ankle). X-rays show some minor scoliosis and a compressed disc (L4 and L5). So far, orthopedic surgeons are reluctant to do anything or even take me seriously because I'm "not old enough to be in a lot of pain." My question is, could this be something more than a compressed disc? I've heard mention of sciatica but I have no idea what that is. I can usually catch it before it gets too bad, but it takes about 4 pills a day (Excedrin, Advil, etc) and I don't think that's a good long term answer. And, one last question - what can I say to the doctor to get him to take me seriously?
How do you deal with chronic back pain? I have tried massage, physio, acupuncture and cupping for my back pain. My doctor has just been prescribing pain killers. I am only 26 years old and Im petrified I am going to have back pain for the rest of my life. I work in disability services and support clients with disabilities and it is very physic work. Please help me.
What does my chronic back pain mean? I am a 13 yr. old female who doesn't exercise or eat well or eat regularly(I starve my self to get skinnier, I know... its bad). I have been having chronic lower back pain only when breathing deeply (mostly late at later in the day). Also, I have been having sharp chest pain (like someone wrapped something really tightly around my chest). The chest pain is more discomforting than painful, but keeps me up at night. My mom thinks it could be a kidney infection, but I'm not sure. P.S. I went to the doctor a while ago, he gave me drugs for heartburn (my heartburn went away... and so did my other symptoms). But I have different symptoms. I think they could be lack of vitamins, fiber, and other things. I try to eat well but my mom constantly buys candy and really fattening food that she eats all the time, so its hard to eat well in a house full of that.
Can chronic back pain be a symptom of some type of cancer? Pain that never goes away never gets better and chronic fatigue (just completely exhausted) family history of cancer please help any info will be appreciated!!
Does anyone know how to relieve chronic back pain due to inflammation and arthritis? I have tried OTC arthritis pain meds they don't offer much relief for me. I have had surgery for herniated disc. My doctor says that there is a lot of inflamation and arthritis in my back. You can't get Vioxx anymore. Is there an alternative?
What can I do about my chronic back pain? I have had surgery three years ago but the pain has come back. I was working but quit to work on my home business. Business is slow (as most start ups are) and I want to get a part time job. Some mornings the back pain is so bad I can barely move. I don't know where I can get a job that will not hurt my back. I use to bartend but this can irritate my back. What should I do?
I have chronic pain in my back from scoliosis and disc degeneration? I also have tendonitis and carpal tunnel in both wrists from my line of work. The problem is that I just detoxed off an opiate addiction because I did not want that in my life anymore. However, the pain I am in is just too much to bear, and my doctors are hesitant to give me opiates now because of my past addiction and my own convictions. Is there a doctor in the syracuse or surrounding area that would sympathize with my situation???? I am completely through with the withdrawls - believe me - I know, and it was hell, but I just can't see being in pain. I am very physically fit. I'm married and have two kids - very responsible - I just have pain all the time. I question now why I got off of the pain killers.... but now I am labeled as a drug addict. Andrea - thank you for your kindness - it is much appreciated. Yes, I did see a chiropractor a few years back, and it helped. This time around, I feel worse - the only thing that managed to help me somewhat was a TENS unit given to me by my chiropractor. Wolfgirl - thank you for your kindness - I haven't tried accupuncture, hmm
What can I do or take for chronic back pain ? Chronic back pain and getting off morphine? Does anyone have any tips for where to get help to get off MST and Ora-Morph, originally prescribed for chronic low back pain - my GP is of NO help whatsoever. I am 27 and been on this medication for almost two years and can't live with the side effects any longer. When I try to stop taking it, I feel suicidal and can't cope with the terrible pain in my back. Even if the dose is late by half an hour, I have withdrawal symptoms and know I am horribly dependent, I desperately want to get off this nasty stuff, but how? For the person suggesting withdrawal can't happen after half an hour - I am on slow release MST - trust me, if I am half an hour late taking them, I know all about it, with sweat dripping down my back, nausea etc. Having been on these tablets every 12 hours for almost two years, that IS withdrawal and unless you have experienced it please don't tell me it doesn't exist. Thanks, supportive answers so far - to clarify the side effects are severe constipation (adding to my backpain) and causing considerable illness in itself, constant heavy sweating, breathing problems, i.e. literally gasping for breath walking about, severe drowsiness, making driving and working extremely difficult, I just zonk out uncontrollably on the liquid, dependence, i.e. having to take more and more for the same pain relief, also other side effect is immuno suppression, I had pneumonia lasting several months and have constant flus as my immune system is lowered, mood changes, dehydration, whole body itching, the list goes on. I want to return to full time work, how can I live a "productive, normal life" like this?! Living like this is NOT a viable long term option as a 27 yr old female! Why, of all people, would a nurse, whom is not medically qualified to comment (pain management is a specialist function), suggest that I shouldn't try to get off this horrible drug!
Yesterday i was prescribed oxycontin for chronic back pain i have been having due to a injury ? there 30 mg tablets, and i have been very scared to take one, because it's oxycontin, but i couldn't take the pain anymore, and took one, its not as bad as i thought it was going to be, but it seems like every part of my body itch's, and i have been scratching like crazy. Is that normal, or is there something wrong ? I will say one thing though, the pain is long gone.

What will relieve chronic back pain Level 10 on the pain scale? I am on a long waiting list for MRI. My VA medical Doc prescribed Gabapentin for nerve pain, I am not feeling any relief taking this med. Plus it does cause me to sleep some, which causes the pain to go past a level 10 upon awaking, due to my back being locked up. Its better to move around than sleep. By the way the pain is lower back, shoots down both legs. I am also on a long waiting list for water therapy.

How are you managing your chronic back pain? I was diagnosed with degenerative disk disease of L-4 L-5 and bilateral facet arthropathy at L-5 S-1. Some days I'm OK but other days I am in unbearable pain. Limiting my movements is not an option as I have 2 children ages 3 and 6 and a husband with cancer. I have been given a referral to an orthopedic surgeon but my referral, which just came in, expires on 9-11 and the surgeon is booked solid past 9/15. Ugh... any advice, please, especially ways you manage your pain.

Took alot of aleve but for some reason I had an allergic reaction to aleve and now can no longer take them. Tylonol does nothing for me. I recently had an outpatient surgery and the doctor perscribed percocet for the recovery. I was at work the next day. No one could beleave I just had surgery. I felt like a normal person. Since I have no health insurance its been very difficult to determine the amount of damage to my back only what the xrays have shown I am only 47 and I feel like I am pushing 80 because of the amount of pain I encounter every single day If the pain gets unbearable I am on the heating pad most of the day,This is no quality of life and I have tried to go to a pain management doctor but they pretty much told me if I did not have insurance that it would cost me thousnds of dollars and they never called me back after I said that I still wanted an appointment. Nice world we live in.If you don't have health insureance doctors can just turn you away.

I was told a car like Citroen Berlingo multispace would be good because the seat are like that of a van and thus better for the back. Is this true and could you recommend other cars that might be suitable

Chronic back pain has moved up to my chest, same spot. what is this.? I'm a cigarette girl in a casino, so I know where my back pain comes from. I've had chronic pain in one spot that has migrated now to my chest in the same spot. It feels like bone pain, not lung. I don't know if this is related, but my chest in general has been sore to the touch the last few days. Is this something to be concerned about? It hurtts to breath too deep, sneeze or cough. Mainly just in this one spot.
